Meet The Style Council: Mr Hayden Cox

Words by The Daily Team

6 March 2017

The Sydneysider entrepreneur and surfboard shaper offers his insider tips on where to eat, drink and stay.

The members of the MR PORTER staff who decide who gets an invite onto our Style Council (don’t ask us to tell you who they are – no one is immune to a generous bribe) are often drawn to those with an entrepreneurial streak. People who show some get-up-and-go. So, our latest addition, the Sydney-born “designer, CEO, author” Mr Hayden Cox was always going to get a look-in. He doesn’t really have an entrepreneurial streak, though, more of an entrepreneurial core. He set up his surfboard business Haydenshapes Surfboards at the tender age of 15, for example, and he designed and patented FutureFlex – a fibre frame surfboard construction that is now sold in more than 70 countries worldwide. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, he has just published a book detailing his business exploits, New Wave Vision, with Simon & Schuster. Find out what makes him tick, below, or check out his insider bar, restaurant and hotel recommendations over on the Style Council. You never know, some of that lucrative business nous might rub off onto you.

What’s your…

…Favourite type of shoe?

__

Sneakers. Nike, Y-3, HUF.

…Favourite watch brand?

__

Samsung Gear S3. It keeps me connected at all times.

…Top style tip?

__

I approach this like I do anything else. Invest in quality. Good basics are never a bad idea. Less is more.

…Favourite grooming product?

__

Anything Aesop. I find their cleanser is best for removing zinc after a surf. La Labo Thé Noir 29 for fragrance.

…Dream car?

__

Audi RS6 Avant

…Top style icon?

__

I’d say the late Dylan Rieder. He was his own person from a style perspective and there wasn't anything forced or contrived about it.

…Favourite album?

__

Nirvana: Unplugged In New York. It just doesn’t seem to date... It’s a favourite of mine to play when I’m in the shaping bay.
