You don’t need to know ERL to know Mr Eli Russell Linnetz’s work. Perhaps you remember the giant quilt A$AP Rocky wore at the 2021 Met Gala, or you may be familiar with the now-ubiquitous Kardashian-West family polaroids and Mr Kanye West’s “Famous” and “Fade” music videos, which Linnetz respectively shot and directed. With an impressive resumé at just 31, the creative polymath is part of a new generation of designers who are rewriting the rules of American fashion.

Much like his lo-fi visual work, his designs for ERL reflect a youthful, unfussy American dream imbued with his memories of Venice Beach’s subcultures and laid-back spirit. The brand’s colourful SS22 collection has just landed on MR PORTER’s virtual shelves – here are five of our favourite pieces.

01.

The statement jacket

We’ve compiled seven reasons why we think you should treat yourself to a new jacket, and ERL’s quilted blouson might just be the eighth. Filled with down for lofty warmth, it’s quilted in concentric hearts and dyed using a pastel-hued palette that recalls 1990s styles.

02.

The rainbow knit

As far as dopamine dressing goes, ERL’s sweater has all the elements to boost your mood and then some. It’s knitted with generous amounts of mohair and alpaca, which make it equally soft and warming.

03.

The printed shirt

Take this shirt as an opportunity to channel your inner flower child. It’s cut for a lightweight handle and printed with a 1970s-inspired motif that sets it apart from classic styles. Florals for spring might be groundbreaking, after all.

04.

The DIY jeans

ERL’s jeans have a decidedly DIY feel – take a closer look and you’ll notice that they’ve been lightly distressed and splattered with paint to make them feel like a pair you’ve owned for years. Style out the cropped length with high-top sneakers.

05.

The reversible gilet

What’s better than the endlessly wearable, trans-seasonal vest? A gilet that can be worn two ways, of course. ERL’s gives you double the styling options – it’s left plain on one side and printed with the brand’s logo and slogans on the reverse.
