Five Things For: Summer In The City
Words by Chris Elvidge
16 May 2023

The menswear scene is… kind of overwhelming right now. There’s so much great stuff to wear this summer that even we’re struggling to stay on top of it, and this is our job. We can only imagine how the average customer (aka you) must feel. With hundreds of new arrivals every week from dozens of different brands, where do you even start? Right here, that’s where. To help you digest the immense volume of menswear on the market, we’ve put our heads together to create a series of three bite-sized edits featuring just a handful of the best new items currently available at MR PORTER. And to make things as simple as possible, we’re sticking to a few broad themes. First up? Summer in the city. Read on for five new-season pieces our editors have got on their Wish Lists…

01.
The Canali summer jacket
Lightweight tailoring is your friend during summer, and nobody does it quite like the Italians. This elegant jacket from Canali is partially lined, cut from naturally breathable linen, and comes in a soft shade of sage-green that won’t absorb too much of the sun’s heat. Oh, and it looks rather dapper, too.

02.
The Brunello Cucinelli linen shirt
Struggling to deal with the high-summer heat? Leave the necktie at home if you can and opt for an open-collared grandad shirt. This striped one from the Italian master of laid-back luxury Brunello Cucinelli is made from a breezy, lightweight linen and is a natural partner to Canali’s suit jacket.

03.
The Gucci loafers
The enduring appeal of Gucci’s horsebit loafers makes them a shoe-in for summer, if you’ll pardon the pun. The Jordaan version – seen here in chocolate-brown suede – has a slightly elongated toe box for a more streamlined profile. Wear them with a fine-knit invisible sock if you want to go for the sockless look.

04.
The Mr Leight sunglasses
A father-son project between Mr Larry Leight, founder of Oliver Peoples, and his son Garrett, who has his own eyewear brand Garrett Leight California Optical, Mr Leight focuses on the premium end of the eyewear market with a range of sleek, retro-inspired frames made entirely by hand in Japan. We’re big fans of these D-frame sunglasses.
