The January Refresh: Our Style Director Picks Six Unmissable Pieces From Mr P.

January might not be the most exciting month of the year, but what it lacks in events and sunlight it more than makes up for in fresh starts and optimism. Got a host of resolutions stacked up for the months ahead? Let one of them be taking the time to assess and redress your wardrobe situation. Now’s the time to pick apart what’s working and what isn’t, donate and make repairs if necessary, and add a few new pieces to up your style ante. No excuses, now – we know you have the time for it.
In the spirit of sartorial revitalisation, we asked MR PORTER’s Style Director, Mr Olie Arnold, to give us his pick from the Mr P. Permanent collection, which handily includes both the timeless staples and more head-turning investment pieces that we’re looking for.
01. The statement coat

First on Arnold’s list is a versatile yet impactful coat. “If you invest in two things this winter, make it a good pair of shoes and an incredible coat,” he says. “The double-faced, cashmere blend fabric of this overcoat is so tactile and is perfect for layering chunky knits under, so will also do the job when the temperature goes south. It will work with everything in your wardrobe, too, so the return on investment is huge.”
02. The new take on tailoring

You’ll need a blazer for those smarter occasions, too. “Tailoring is back, but with a new energy, so cast off those traditional traits and mix things up by choosing a more sartorial look,” Arnold says. “This double-breasted tuxedo jacket has self-fabric lapels, rather than satin, so don’t feel obliged to go fully Bond and only wear it with a bow tie. It will work equally well over a knit with a pair of jeans.”
03. The fan-favourite shearling trucker

“Shearling jackets have been having a moment over the past few years and lots of brands are offering their own version,” Arnold says. “But not all brands boast this level of quality.” No surprises here, then, that it’s one of Mr P.’s bestselling items. “The nappa leather used for the outer skin is second to none and the shearling is so soft that it’s like getting a hug from a loved one,” Arnold says. “Keeping warm during these cold months at the start of the year is essential, but this ensures you will look incredible at the same time.”
04. The smart alternative knit

Fine knits are a great way to freshen up your winter wardrobe according to Arnold. “Merino is one of the hardest performing but softest wools on the market,” he says. “I often prefer wearing one these over wearing a shirt as it looks equally sharp but feels way more comfortable – and looks less stuffy.”
05. The smart-casual twill trousers

“I’ve always been a big fan of dressing up sportswear and dressing down tailoring, so having a pair of wool tailored trousers in the wardrobe is imperative,” Arnold says. “I love the combination of an elasticated back on the waist and a pleated front as it provides both a modern look and a comfortable fit. I wear mine with white sneakers and a cashmere knit.”
06. The mighty double monk-strap shoes

Finally, those incredible shoes. “Like tailoring, hard shoes are striding out of wardrobes around the world after being cast aside during Covid,” Arnold says. “But what’s doubly exciting about this Olie pair is the double monk strap on a Vibram chunky commando sole. This allows a more versatile option that looks equally at home with a suit as it does with a pair of jeans.”
