Three Very British Swiss-Made Watches

Words by Mr Adam Welch

28 October 2016

Make time for an adventure with one of these pieces from Farer, inspired by the world’s greatest explorers.

British watch brand Farer (pronounced “fair-er”, as in “wayfarer”) has only been around since 2015. Yet its charming, vintage-feel designs tap into an idea that’s centuries old: everybody wants an adventure now and then. Taking inspiration from the stories of historic British wayfarers, from Elizabethan seaman Mr Martin Frobisher to 1920s archaeologist Mr Howard Carter, all Farer’s elegant watches are designed in the UK and then hand-made to exacting standards in Switzerland, a fact that the more sharp-eyed among you may have realised from the fact that each dial bears the coveted “Swiss Made” epithet. As of this week, MR PORTER is proud to be offering the brand’s quartz-based models, all of which represent a slice of Swiss-made excellence at a very reasonable price point indeed. Scroll down to discover three of our favourite variations:

Carter Stainless Steel And Leather Watch

Named after Mr Howard Carter, the man who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in November 1922, Farer’s carter watch is packed full of its own treasures, from its dual-time functionality to its subtle date indicator and eye-catching blue, burned orange and yellow colour palette. Flip it over and you’ll see a compass engraved on the back of the steel case – this being something of a Farer signature.

Frobisher II Stainless Steel And Leather Watch

In general, sequels tend to not measure up very well to their predecessors. But the same cannot be said of the Frobisher II, the second version of Farer’s watch inspired by the 16th-century sailor Mr Martin Frobisher. Updating the original’s subdial design with a brown strap, burnt orange hands and red and blue accents, it uses a Swiss-made Ronda 6004.D movement and a brushed 316L stainless-steel case. Note the bronze crown – this is another characteristic feature of Farer watches.

Stark Stainless Steel And Leather Watch

With its tan leather strap and colourful blue hands, the Stark is a sprightly daytime watch with a subdial in the same pearlescent-white finish as the main face. Overall, it offers the most subtle and light colour palette of Farer’s watches, and so is ready for anything, much like its inspiration, the famed travel writer Dame Freya Stark – the first Westerner to journey through many parts of the Middle East.
