You may have noticed that MR PORTER’s Summer Shop is open for business, and our homepage is awash with stylish men wearing swim shorts, short-sleeved shirts and sandals. Which is all well and good, but a quick glance at the calendar reveals that we’re only just in May, a month that sits firmly in the orbital quadrant designated – in the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, at least – as spring. And in the interest of being fully engaged in the moment, it pays to dress for the moment, too. But how? Handily, this spring, a bunch of the best-dressed guys out there have made an effort, appearing at film premieres, the Met Gala, even just nipping out to the shops. And, for our part, we’ve amassed the photographic evidence, below.
01. Simon Porte Jacquemus

Few people do summertime dressing quite like Simon Porte Jacquemus. The “j’aime le soleil” man himself. In Los Angeles, at the opening of his new store on Melrose, he welcomed guests to a summer market and French-inspired living space, all in sunny yellow tones. His outfit followed suit, with a fisherman-style jacket, a woven belt and Jacquemus boat shoes (a collaboration with Timberland) in different tones of the same shade.
02. Michael B Jordan

What if we told you that spring’s It-staple was the humble cardigan? Or not so humble after all, if its matches pattern becomes the centrepiece of Michael B Jordan’s outfit. Colour coordination is one of the main takeaways here – and this is proof that a little effort really brings you places (on our best-dressed list, at least). With matching bag and shoes, and you can get away with a plain tee underneath.
03. Omari Douglas

Everything about Omari Douglas’ look at the press-night performance of Ghosts at the Lyric Hammersmith in London says spring. We can’t quite pinpoint what it is – but it’s that certain je ne sais quoi that defines the actor’s excellent sartorial choices. Be it the breezy ankle-length, lightly flared trousers, the smart adidas raincoat or the retro football sneakers (one of the first pairs from the collaboration between adidas and Wales Bonner), we’re here for it.
04. Pedro Pascal

We live in a messed-up reality where trans women, in the UK at least, can now be barred from using a women’s toilet. Perhaps it is karmic realignment, then, that means that this world – and not the one with the mushroom plague, nor the other one with all the multiverses, nor the other-other one far, far away with all the Muppets – gets a real hero like Pedro Pascal. In London to support Thunderbolts*, as well as the trans community, The Last Of Us actor demonstrates that if you’re going to wear a statement piece, political or otherwise – in this instance a Conner Ives T-shirt – it pays to keep the rest of your outfit muted. 05. Paul Mescal

Not content with repping one British institution of the 1960s – he’s signed on as Sir Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes’ four-film Beatles project – Paul Mescal is heavily rumoured to be taking on another. His appearance at the V&A won’t do much to quell Bond speculation, given how good he looks in a tuxedo. Also enjoying the Mescal glow is Cartier, a French concern of considerably deeper dotage. The event was to mark the opening of the exhibition celebrating the jeweller and watchmaker, yet it’s the Irish actor that caught our eye. “When you’ve got a job to do, you gotta do it well,” as Sir Paul himself put it, during another convergence with 007.
06. Harry Styles

We had a lot of time for the sequins-and-boas-era Harry Styles. But, right now, we’re really enjoying the singer and actor’s segue into normcore. Not just normcore, but just-slipping-out-for-a-copy-of-the-Racing-Post mundanity that somehow, in his hands – shoved in pockets, naturally – still sparkles like a mirror ball. Obviously, a pair of Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses will help you stand out while being inconspicuous. The jacket – in an iridescently ordinary blue, collar popped – works as hard as a chore coat should. The leather loafers, meanwhile, have seen some things. It’s middle of the road, but also streets ahead.
07. Jeremy O Harris

Meanwhile, at the Met Gala, playwright Jeremy O Harris took the dress code – “Tailored For You”, a nod to the museum’s latest exhibit, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style – to its logical conclusion. And wearing Balmain, with a one-of-a-kind ring by the British jeweller Benjamin Hawkins, he really landed the look of a 19th-century Black dandy – with perhaps a shade of Hamilton. A reminder to anyone whose mind jumps straight to Beau Brummell that a Black man undoubtedly got there first. Read about the importance of this exhibition here.
08. Sir Lewis Hamilton

For all the buzz surrounding Wales Bonner’s adidas collabs, the intersection that is truly key to understanding the designer is her deft application of Black history and culture in her work. The Central Saint Martins graduate was rightly all over the red carpet at this year’s Met Gala, and perhaps nowhere better showcased than on Sir Lewis Hamilton, himself a co-chair of the event. The custom suit and matching beret married formalwear with a military bent, with the Ferrari driver taking the racing line when it came to the theme.
09. Colman Domingo

Given that Colman Domingo is a recurring presence on our best-dressed list, when he was also announced co-chair of this year’s Met Gala, we knew it was going to be major. And the perfectly executed, layered Valentino Garavani look certainly didn’t disappoint. He chose something he truly felt he belonged in – an embellished cloak in royal blue (the shade his mother thinks he looks best in) and an equally well-thought-out suit from the Roman house. An oversized dotted flower brooch contrasts nicely with the jacket’s check pattern, while a loosely tied ribbon – also with polka dots – replaces a classic tie.
