30 Tracks You Should Be Listening To Right Now

Words by Mr Timothy Noakes

28 February 2017

Turn up the volume for 2017’s hottest new records.

2017 may be off to an ignominious start, but here at MR PORTER we prefer to place creative excellence and positivity at the centre of your attention. So, for the next two hours we advise you to turn off Twitter, log off Facebook and shut down Instagram. Forget fake news and filter bubbles, and focus on nothing but the outstanding music that 30 supremely talented artists have brought us so far this year. Below, we’ve shone a spotlight on five of our favourites, but make sure you check out each musician on the playlist, as you’ll be hearing a lot from them over the course of this year.

Blanck Mass

“Please”

Since co-founding cult UK drone outfit Fuck Buttons in 2004, Mr Benjamin John Power has established himself as one of the leading electronic musicians of his generation. In 2011, he started a solo project called Blanck Mass, and a year later Mr Danny Boyle used his track “Sundowner” for the Olympic Opening Ceremony. As a teaser for his new album (due in March), Mr Power dropped the dreamy single “Please” in January, and in the process set the bar very high for other electronic producers to follow in 2017. If you like Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker”, you’ll love this.

Nines

“Love 2 The Game”

Sonically, Harlesden-based rapper Nines has more in common with US trap than the UK grime scene. Combining atmospheric rhythms with the panache of Future, Nines documents life in London’s streets with unrivalled style, imagination and swagger. Having established himself on the mixtape circuit, Nines has just released his debut album One Foot Out, which went to number four on the album chart and quickly became the most streamed record in the UK that week. A true diamond in the rough.

Ross From Friends

“Talk To Me You’ll Understand”

Hands down winner of the best artist name ever, this is not Mr David Schwimmer’s attempt at being a tech house guru, but in fact the work of a young South London producer who fuses mellow synth chords, screaming sex guitar and pounding 4/4 beats to devastating effect. If you’re expecting remixes of The Rembrandts, you’re going to be disappointed. But if you’re in the market for hypnotic downtempo house that owes more than a little to Burial, his new track will get your blood pumping and your feet moving.

Mr Sam Gellaitry

“Jungle Waters”

Mr Sam Gellaitry’s music is so rich with new ideas, immense arrangements and intricate textures, that it’s sometimes hard to believe he’s just 20 years old. Signed to trendsetting label XL Recordings, his imagination knows no bounds. In fact, with every release he seems to redefine the parameters of modern electronic music. Like Hudson Mohawke and Rustie before him, this is a young Scot well worth paying very close attention to. It will only be a matter of time before he’s producing for the biggest stars in the world.

Thundercat

“Show You The Way”

An LA veteran whose musical renaissance shows no sign of slowing down, Thundercat first cut his teeth playing bass in iconic hardcore group Suicidal Tendencies. Brought back into public consciousness thanks to Flying Lotus and Ms Erykah Badu, his mastery of multi-layered harmonies and sunshine-infused funk grooves never fails to put a smile on our face. The fact that he has recruited legendary 1980s crooners Mr Michael McDonald and Mr Kenny Loggins for his new jam makes us love him even more.
