THE JOURNAL

It’s official: summer is over. The nights are getting longer and the days are, just about, getting colder. But the cold weather hasn’t fully drawn in yet, and so we’re not quite at big-coat season. Instead, we’re somewhere in between. Summer is giving over to autumn, knitwear is making its reappearance and it’s time to find the perfect jacket for this transitional period. While this is an opportunity to welcome an old friend back from the depths of the wardrobe, it’s also a chance to go for something new and level up for autumn. Whether its a varsity-style bomber jacket or a new take on an old classic, here are five that will equip you for the colder days ahead.
01.
The logo Off-White twill bomber jacket

Off-White’s bomber jacket brings a varsity approach to the design classic. Constructed from a melange twill, the jacket arrives in an understated grey and is given a black trim around the collar and sleeves – that college influence again. Other features include an Off-White logo embroidered on the chest, and black diagonal stripes down the lines. The muted colours, casual design and comfortable fit make it perfect for layering, so throw it on over a hoodie to keep the cold out.

The Maison Margiela waxed-cotton jacket

Waxed jackets may be more associated with life in the country, but this one has been cleverly reworked – just as you’d expect from Maison Margiela. Coming with a corduroy trim and tartan lining – so far, so classic – the petrol-green waxed-cotton jacket is finished with paint splatters to give it the house’s signature pre-distressed look. The whole thing is finished with an adjustable back strap, coming together to create a luxe take on a utility staple.

The classic Valstar suede bomber jacket

The A-1 jacket was the first ever flight jacket, designed and produced almost 100 years ago to be worn by pilots. Valstar has revisited that design, managing to reference the jacket’s functional roots while creating a perfect transitional jacket, complete with a light-blue finish and supple suede construction. We’d recommend keeping it classic with such an iconic jacket. You can’t go wrong with a grey T-shirt and blue jeans.

The fleece-collar TOM FORD cotton flight jacket

The bomber jacket is an all time classic, and TOM FORD is another to take inspiration from it. The military influence continues away from just the shape, with an army-green colour, practical pockets and a fleece-lined collar. Where once these features made jackets like this perfect for flying, now they all come together to make it the ideal autumn outerwear.

The luxury Loro Piana shearling gilet

This Loro Piana gilet is the perfect balance of form and function. On one hand, there’s the shearling lining, making it perfect for colder weather. Meanwhile, the luxe brown suede finish also keeps it smart. The gilet is packed with other details – including a high collar for warmth, a two-way zipper and roomy pockets – all of which help to equip it, and you, for the transitional period ahead.
