MR PORTER partners with Cartier on their new range of sunglasses – perfect for a day out in the city.
There are few items a man needs more when preparing for a break in the city than a great pair of sunglasses. And if you want the quality of said sunglasses to be assured, you could do a lot worse than take a pair made by a brand as esteemed as Cartier. The iconic watch and jewellery house’s Santos de Cartier sunglasses line is inspired by the pioneering Brazilian aviator Mr Alberto Santos-Dumont (for whom Cartier made one of the first modern men’s wristwatches in 1904) – meaning these platinum coloured “pilot” frames, a contemporary yet sophisticated update on the aviator style, are more than up to the task. We’re not suggesting that a weekend of bar-hopping and sightseeing is quite as treacherous as traversing the skies, of course, but we all want to know that we have the requisite tools to see us through a weekend away, whether we’re battling low-lying winter sun in Europe or blazing Miami heat.

The benefits of these sunglasses – expertly crafted in France – are not all practical, of course. Little details such as the brushed platinum finish and bowed screws are not designed to save you from the sun (that’s what the grey-graded polarised lenses are for), but they will keep you looking really rather cool. And, apart from imbuing the wearer with an air of sophistication while on the move, these frames will work extremely well should you want to hide the effects of an evening spent in a cocktail bar.
Keep the versatile nature of these sunglasses in mind when you’re selecting clothes for your trip, and pack some sturdy, comfortable shoes (perfect for plodding city streets), a pair of loose, breathable cotton trousers, and a decent backpack (in case your adventure also involves souvenirs).
