Nine Anti-Ageing Products Every Man Should Have

Words by Mr Ashley Clarke

Nothing to see here, just the secrets to eternal youth.

Ever wanted to feel excruciatingly aware of your own mortality? Read up on sundial mottos. Usually in Latin, they are traditionally inscribed on the time-telling artefacts and say things like “Lente hora, celeriter anni”. (An hour passes slowly, but the years go by quickly.) Frightening stuff. Anyway, the point is that you will, eventually, transmogrify from a smooth-skinned grape to a wrinkled raisin – no matter how much eye cream you slather on. But, thankfully, there are a few discerning products out there to help you grow old gracefully. Adding some anti-ageing products into your routine of self-maintenance is a simple means of keeping yourself looking well and not withered. So, from moisturiser to retinol, here’s our pick of the best.

If you’re looking a little more tired than you’d like, or fancy ironing out a few of those fine lines that have started appearing around your eyes, a decent anti-ageing moisturiser is a great place to start. Perricone MD’s SPF30 Photo Plasma Moisturiser has a pleasant mousse-like consistency, protects against UVA and UVB rays, and makes skin brighter and suppler. Sisley - Paris’ All Day All Year Essential Anti-Ageing Day Care does exactly as it says on the tube, and is intended as an all-rounder anti-ageing moisturiser that gives skin a healthy boost – apply it every morning and age markedly slower.

Daytime moisturiser is a great protector and good for maintenance, but if you really want to nourish your skin and keep it healthy, you’ll want to get something that works after dark too. Skin heals itself while you sleep and is more receptive to products overnight. Enter Dr Sebagh’s Supreme Night Secret, which has “biotech” ingredients to work on skin while you sleep, leaving skin plumper and more hydrated the morning after. Also see Dr. Jackson’s Night Skin Cream, a satisfyingly thick moisturiser that nonetheless sinks into skin easily, and contains baobab to fortify skin against the elements.

This will come as no surprise, but if you are getting on a bit, it’ll be your eyes that give you away. Invest in a good eye cream to keep you looking alert – this one from Erno Laszlo is made with “active gels and patented raspberry cultured cells”. We’re not sure exactly what those things do, but an application of this will have your eyes looking much brighter, and works double-time to erase pesky crinkles in the eye area. For something more affordable, see Clinique’s anti-age eye cream, which will erase and stave off dark circles and puffiness, and even contains wrinkle-reducing whey protein.

“Anyone who is serious about anti-ageing, whether it be preventative or restorative, should have retinol in their anti-ageing routine,” says Dr Dennis Gross. A derivative of vitamin A, retinol can smooth out and regenerate skin, and can be a truly effective weapon in your anti-ageing arsenal. 111Skin’s Celestial Black Diamond Retinol Oil contains a blend of eight natural oils to help absorb the retinol, while Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare’s Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Peel exfoliates surface cells and deeply hydrates skin, too. You’ll want to apply retinol overnight when skin metabolism is at its best, and because retinol can make skin more sensitive, watch your sun exposure the following day and apply an SPF.

OK, it’s time to bring in the big guns. Natura Bissé’s Inhibit High Definition Serum is an innovative product that works in some rather bold ways. “It was designed to give the same benefits as fillers and Botox, and to get the same results, but without any invasive procedures and without any downtime,” explains Ms Sarah Herring, one of Natura Bissé’s skincare experts. She adds that, in order to work, it “penetrates deep into the skin and inhibits the message from the brain telling the muscles to move. If you are shocked or smiling, it won’t affect your facial expressions.” Simply, if your brow is besmirched with furrows and your crows’ feet are deep, this is the thing to smooth them out. Of course, it has a price tag to match, but if you’re serious about eternal youth, well, it’s an easy sell.
