Go Out: Introducing Our Global Celebration Of The Great Outdoors With Health In Mind

Words by The MR PORTER Team

11 October 2021

Is there anything more rejuvenating for mind, body and soul than spending time in the great outdoors? Well, we firmly believe that there is: doing so with friends. Friendship is an enduring theme of MR PORTER Health in Mind, our initiative to help men live happier, healthier lives. And to that end, strong, lasting relationships can be hugely beneficial to our mental and physical wellbeing. Indeed, many studies have suggested they are associated with increased life expectancy.

That’s why, for this year’s MR PORTER Health in Mind campaign, we’re launching Go Out, a celebration of the healing power of outdoor adventures with close friends. These adventures needn’t involve trekking to the four corners of the Earth. In fact, you don’t have to travel at all. This week In The Journal, we’re taking time to appreciate the wonder of local places as we go for an urban wander in Tokyo, fishing in New York, camp out in the Scandinavian wilderness and put some work in on the allotments in north London.

To mark World Mental Health Day, we’ve been encouraging you to do the same and keep us in the loop on Instagram with #MRPORTERGoOut. If you need some gear to Go Out in, there’s our capsule collection, the net profits of which are being donated to MR PORTER’s Health in Mind Fund. Need more inspiration? Check out where our friends around the globe have been going out, below.

A wander in the city

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo may not be the first place that springs to mind when you mention the great outdoors, but perhaps it should be. The Japanese capital is a playground ripe for outdoor adventure and exploration, and a brilliant place to go walking. To dig into the area’s walking scene, we linked up with magazine guru Mr Mitsuru Takeshita, who takes us on an urban hike through the backstreets of Shibuya with his long-time walking companion and friend Mr Shotaro Tsuda.

A metropolitan fishing trip

New York City, US

Of all the leisure pursuits you might associate with the Big Apple, fishing may not be top of the list. But for Messrs Colin McElroy and Mac Huelster, casting out in Jamaica Bay in the city is a way to take time out and enjoy the great outdoors. We caught up with them to discover why fishing is the new going out.

A hike in the wilderness

Rondane, Norway

Rondane in eastern Norway is the country’s oldest national park. It covers 963sq km and you can easily go for days without seeing another soul. It is Mr Marius Nilsen’s “go-to place” for peace and quiet, but for his Go Out adventure, the photographer brought along his friend, Mr Christian Ekdahl, to document their hike into the wilderness for MR PORTER.

A day on the allotments

London, UK

Perhaps surprisingly, green space makes up nearly half of London. It has vast parks, patches of wood and rows and rows of private gardens – not to mention the 36,000 allotments still spread across the city. Publican Mr Chris Johnson and architect Mr Sam Gledhill rent neighbouring plots at East Hale in Tottenham, north London, which is where MR PORTER joined them for a final Go Out adventure.

From 11 October, all net profits from our special Go Out collection will be donated to the MR PORTER Health In Mind Fund powered by Movember, which supports vital initiatives in men’s physical and mental health.
