Over the past couple of years, it’s felt as though the doors have been blown open when it comes to men’s style. Can you wear a brown belt with black shoes? Who cares! This is the era of “anything goes”. It’s a shift we’ve seen on the red carpet, too, as men from Mr Timothée Chalamet to Mr Lee Pace and Mr Oscar Isaac have garnered acclaim for sticking two fingers up to the rules of formal dressing. With that in mind, and at the start of a new year, we’re taking a look at who’s likely to be next to pick up internet acclaim (and a coveted inclusion in our monthly “Best Dressed” roundups). If we were gamblers, these are the men we’d be betting on causing a red-carpet stir in 2023.

Mr Diego Calva

It’s too early to know whether Mr Damien Chazelle’s Babylon will become the blockbuster it’s hoping to be, but it has already succeeded in bringing a new leading man to the forefront. Mr Diego Calva, best known for a recurrent role in Narcos: Mexico, has emerged as one to watch during awards season for his pared-back and 1990s-inflected approach to style. It’s not minimal, exactly, but there’s a refreshing lack of bell and whistles to how Calva dresses, which we hope continues through Babylon’s promotional run.

Mr Will Sharpe

It’s been a few weeks since the twist-filled finale of the second season of The White Lotus, but we’re still wary of getting scolded for spoilers. It’s safe to say, though, that Mr Will Sharpe emerged as one of the show’s breakthrough stars. Sharpe’s approach to style veers toward the rakishly unkempt, thanks to his penchant for deconstructed clothing. Expect to see him in many more pairs of artfully swishy trousers and oversized tailoring as the year progresses.

Mr Aldis Hodge

Though Mr Aldis Hodge isn’t exactly new on the scene (he’s a Sag Award-winning actor, after all), it’s more recently that he’s developed a confident and dandyish approach to dressing. From flocked suits to wrap-fronted shirts, Hodge embodies a refreshingly playful approach to formal style, which has made him stand out among a sea of navy suits. And with a new role within the DC Universe, he’s looking increasingly primed for bona fide movie-star status.

Mr Niels Schneider

If your style veers more towards the rakish, rock-and-roll inspired stylings of Messrs Harry Styles and Timothée Chalamet, we’d suggest looking closer at the French-Canadian actor Mr Niels Schneider. Though he’s a certified star in France, having won the prestigious César Award in 2017, it’s his style which is already attracting more international attention. Less flamboyant than Styles et al, Schneider favours elegantly cut tailoring (chiefly by SAINT LAURENT) with enough flourishes to make it tick: a corded necktie, a metallic pinstripe or a gently flared trouser.

Mr Lukas Gage

Is there such a thing as “American” style anymore? If so, Mr Lukas Gage might be this year’s embodiment of it. After making waves during a particularly memorable moment during The White Lotus’ first season (if you can’t remember, don’t Google it at work), this year Gage joins the cast of Netflix’s campy, violent series You. Which means we’re sure to see more of his classically Californian combination of heritage workwear and artfully tousled hair.

Mr Ncuti Gatwa

Even those with only a passing knowledge of the British TV stalwart Doctor Who will be aware that the regular recasting of its title character is a foundational part of the show. The newest actor to pick up the role is Mr Ncuti Gatwa, best known for his work on the Netflix series Sex Education. Aside from the notable achievement of being the first Black actor to play the Doctor, Gatwa’s casting should also present some headline-grabbing style, thanks to the actor’s unconventional and adventurous looks.
