THE JOURNAL

MR PORTER’s roots may be in good old Blighty, but this season we’re in the midst of a US takeover. That’s right, we’re talking about In America, our latest blockbuster capsule collection that showcases the very best of American menswear. One the one hand, consider it a celebration of those who sit at the cutting-edge of contemporary US fashion and culture (expect all the hottest street and skatewear, of course); on the other, an homage to those all-American classics that have endured the ages. From collegiate-style knitwear to a modern-day spin on the cowboy boot, we’ve selected six must-have items below that perfectly embody the latter.
01.
The Thom Browne varsity cardigan

Newly crowned CFDA chairman Mr Thom Browne could rightly claim a stake in the preppy revival that’s seen penny loafers, polo shirts and other such collegiate wares return to the fore of menswear. His latest collection leans heavily into this scholarly aesthetic, with pieces such as this graphic yet unassuming cashmere cardigan that looks straight out the hallowed halls of an Ivy.
02.
The Sid Mashburn Western shirt

Like many of the most tried-and-true menswear pieces, the devil’s in the details with this cotton chambray shirt. The work of Atlanta-based husband-and-wife duo Sid Mashburn, it’s the sort of dialled-down layering essential that’ll slot seamlessly into your current rotation, but likewise bears triple-snap cuffs and pointed yokes for a subtle yeehaw edge.
03.
The TOM FORD leather jacket

If there’s one thing we know about fashion’s favourite Texan, it’s that he doesn’t do things by halves, and here it appears Mr Tom Ford has set out to create most luxurious biker jacket that money can buy. In blueprint at least, his iteration doesn’t stray too far from the elements that have made it a wardrobe staple since the Mr James Dean’s days. However, being a TOM FORD creation, it’s been crafted in Italy from the finest calf leather and cut to fit as impeccably as his trademark tuxedos.
04.
The Enfants Riches Déprimés cowboy boots

Always one to keep his audience on their toes, the punkish Mr Henri Alexander Levy of Enfants Riches Déprimés has made an unexpected detour at the rodeo for AW22 with these cowboy-inspired Thunderhead boots. With their star-shaped appliqués, metal hardware and stacked heels, they channel key features of old-school frontier styles – but their head-turning hue makes them perfectly suited for roaming more urban milieus.
05.
The BODE camp-collar shirt

Sure, our In America collection is brimming with the big-name behemoths of American menswear (TOM FORD, Thom Browne, et al), but it also highlights a smattering of new-gen icons such as the brilliant Ms Emily Bode. Here, the A-list favourite has breathed new life into the camp-collar shirt by reworking it in a luxurious lightweight silk-satin and stamping it with painterly scrawls that nod to the southernmost, sunniest US state.
06.
The Guess USA + Eli Russell Linnetz classic blue jeans

You didn’t really think we’d reach the end of this roundup without paying tribute to the most all-American of all-American classics, did you? But note: not all blue jeans are created equal. This deceptively simple straight-leg pair by Guess USA has been crafted in partnership with it-designer du jour Mr Eli Russell Linnetz – and more importantly, has nailed the two all-important ingredients that are a lived-in wash and a flattering fit.
