Get Dressed For The Beautiful Game With These Mr P. Polo Shirts
We’re midway through the domestic football season and the World Cup is upon is. No wonder many of us at MR PORTER have football on the brain.
Which is why it’s incredibly good timing (OK, yes, we planned it this way) that our football-inspired polo shirts from in-house brand Mr P. are landing on our shelves this week. Crafted from a luxury knit, these colourful heftily striped shirts conjure days of football past, when players played the beautiful game in cotton jerseys rather than technical fabrics and shorts were itsy-bitsy.
“We wanted to elevate this iconic piece of kit and recreate it with high-quality fabrics,” says Mr Olie Arnold, Style Director at MR PORTER. Cotton and Lyocell blends were used for a more tactile feel, and woven into an age-old honeycomb-knitting technique from the Aran Islands to produce “a highly crafted and desirable piece”.
Arnold and the Mr P. design team did their research. “We uncovered so many incredible references, not only on the pitch, but on the street and in popular culture especially the 1990s indie music scene,” Arnold says. The result is a selection of pieces that looks authentic-yet-elevated so you can show your love for the game without looking like you’ve spent too many hours in the pub.
“The culture that surrounds football is a rich and varied,” says Arnold. “Its impact on style is immeasurable.” Looking to make your own impact on style? Check out the capsule and choose your colours – whether you decide to pair your polo with tiny shorts is, ultimately, your call, but we like ours with jeans and loafers, maybe even a tidy sneaker. Jumpers for goalposts, marvellous.
