THE JOURNAL

Well then, here we are again. As the curtain falls on a sweltering summer spent wearing as little as possible, it’s time to grab our sweaters and scarves and head back into peak layering season. September is the biggest month in the fashion calendar for a very simple reason – more clothes to wear means more opportunities for designers to do their thing, and we’re happy to report that they’ve been busy as ever ahead of the AW22 season, devising plenty of new ways to keep us warm and stylish as we approach the colder months. With a huge range of new releases available to buy right now on MR PORTER, what better time to dive in and pick out a few highlights?
01.
Hot fuzz

If you’re seeing a lot of mohair around this autumn, blame Marni. The Italian designer brand has been championing the fabric in its recent collections (who could forget that spectacular hot-pink Argyle cardigan from AW21) and it’s doubling down this season with plenty more of the fuzzy-wuzzy stuff. The sweater and cardigan seen here – you really can’t miss them – set the tone for the wider season, which, in a nutshell, is all about having fun with colour and texture. We’ve done exactly that by throwing a Barbie-pink calf hair belt from Acne Studios into the mix.
02.
Low-key luxury

Combining black and white yarns for a striking marl effect, this beautiful oversized sweater from The Row is one of our highlights of the new season – and about as much of a statement as you’re going to get from the famously minimalist New York brand. Sticking with the textured monochrome theme is LOEWE’s logo-jacquard bucket hat, a pair of virgin-wool trousers from Loro Piana, and white leather sneakers from Officine Creative. Meanwhile, a belt from Bottega Veneta in the house’s now-famous “Bottega Green” provides an eye-catching point of difference.
03.
Back to school

The crunch of leaves underfoot in the old quad, the early morning clunk-swoosh of oars on the river; waking up late and pedalling double-speed to the lecture hall… autumn’s arrival brings an onrush of nostalgic memories, even if they’re just from watching Good Will Hunting or A Beautiful Mind one_ _too many times. The designers at Acne Studios have clearly been inspired by the old-school collegiate look this season, though their vision is updated for the 2020s with a generous splash of colour. We’ve paired the brand’s rainbow sweater and scarf with a pair of brown chinos from Erdem and dad sneakers from Salomon.
04.
Smart sweats

Los Angeles-based Les Tien is one of the brands at the vanguard of the new post-pandemic sweats movement, utilising premium materials and clever dyeing techniques to create a range of loopback cotton basics that you’ll have no worries about wearing outdoors. Here, we’ve styled the brand’s emerald-green quarter-zip sweatshirt as you might do a sweater by throwing it over a casual shirt and T-shirt for an effortlessly laid-back take on weekend dressing. A bucket hat and a pair of G.H. Bass & Co. Weejuns – the original, Ivy League-certified penny loafers – finish things off in style.
05.
The new-new tailoring

We know, it seems as if there is a “new tailoring” movement every six months, but this really is the shape of things to come. Sitting at a comfortable midpoint on the formality scale, Boglioli’s K-jacket is a clear example of the Milanese brand’s signature soft tailoring – but the double-breasted configuration adds just a touch of dressy formality that keeps it out of “WFH client call” territory. Sticking with a neutral palette, a pair of white chinos from Drake’s complement the beige of the jacket and put those “no white after Labor Day” superstitions to bed once and for all, while a pair of salmon-pink canvas sneakers from Converse and a necklace from Alice Made This complete the look.
06.
All about texture

The wonder of introducing unexpected textures into your wardrobe is that it can freshen up even the simplest of outfits. This burnt-orange shirt from Mr P. is cut from a muslin cloth that bears a subtly crinkled appearance – imagine unironed, but in a good way – while the trousers from the cult Venetian tailoring brand Barena are tailored from wool flannel, a classic autumnal fabric but one rarely seen in cream. These leather sandals from Jil Sander might not seem a typical choice for cooler weather, but wear them over chunky socks – on dry days, we ought to add – and they remain a viable option well into the cooler months.
