It’s the sneaker story of the summer: Sambas are having a moment (again). Old-school Adidas sneakers have never exactly lost their appeal, but right now they’re on track to becoming the most hyped, sell-out footwear of the season.
Competition is fierce within the ranks of vintage Adidas models, with all-time lassics such as the Campus 80 and the Stan Smith proving enduringly popular. But the Samba has an ace in its sleeve: step forward London menswear designer Ms Grace Wales Bonner, who, with the latest edition of her ongoing adidas Originals collaboration, makes the strongest case for a summer of Samba yet.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the Samba Silver: with its reflective gunmetal finish and elaborate three stripe stitching along the sides, it’s one of the punchiest takes on the classic sneaker we’ve seen yet. If your style is less star striker and more reliable defender, then the Samba Nubuck – in dialled down hues of ecru and dark brown –makes a great low-key choice. Wales Bonner’s trademark attention to detail and respect for heritage is in evidence here too, with a hefty tongue and earthy rubber soles giving the sneaker proper Sunday football feels.

That nostalgic, grass-roots quality is very much in keeping with the overall mood of this SS23 adidas Originals x Wales Bonner collection. Over five seasons of collaboration with the iconic sporting label, the British Fashion Award winner has drawn inspiration from artists, scholars and thinkers of the Caribbean, India, and West Africa to produce collections with all the feeling of familiar classics elevated into strikingly of-the-moment pieces.
This time out, fresh from giving the Jamaican football team a serious kit upgrade, the London born designer flies the flag for her Caribbean heritage with a knitted tracksuit in the national colours of green, black, and collegiate gold. Then there’s Wales Bonner’s take on the SL72 sneaker in the same vibrant hues, which gives the Samba a run for its money in the desirability stakes.

Local inspiration runs deep throughout the SS23 collection, with colours clearly inspired by the Jamaican landscape and the influence of national icon Mr Bob Marley evident in a smart Harrington Jacket and flared trouser set. In a previous adidas Originals collab, Wales Bonner drew on Marley’s style in subtly elevated takes on his 1970s tracksuits; here, his sartorial groove can be felt throughout. You could easily imagine Marley in the WB knitted vest, with its classic argyle pattern print in earthy browns, red and an invigorating clear mint.

Sambas may be the collection’s scene stealers, but this colour scheme is worthy of its own headlines. That refreshingly sharp mint gets the full treatment it deserves in a nylon anorak and matching trackpants. Bonus points: removable sleeves and bottom legs turn this into a totally summer ready, sleeveless top and shorts. Similarly seasonal is the towelling terry sportswear, which, in its dark brown hue, and gorgeously retro V-neck collar, feels like the sexiest sportswear of the summer. It's an effortless mood that which pervades the whole adidas Originals x Wales Bonner collaboration. Those classic Samba sneakers may grab all the attention the summer, but from head to toe, this is a collection that lives up to the hype.
