The Sneaker Drop: January’s New Shoes From Nike And Adidas

Words by Mr Jim Merrett

9 January 2023

Janus – the Roman god of beginnings and endings, time, duality, doors and gates, which is, when you think about it, quite a lot of ground to cover – is often depicted with two faces, looking both forward and back. That he lends his name to January suggests the role the month plays in our calendar. But surely he also had two feet? Suitably, this month’s new sneakers are reissues that embrace the past, but also point to the future. Which direction are your kicks going to take you in this year?

Gazelle 85 by adidas Originals

The original adidas Gazelle was built on the last of a running shoe commissioned for the 1960 Olympics in Rome and was retooled later that decade for handball and football. It is perhaps this latter guise for which the shoe is best known, where it endured as regulation footwear on the football terraces and was later adopted by Britpop bands and fans. This iteration is based on a revised edition, released in 1985. It comes in a colourway that would appeal to Mancunian musicians on a certain side of the city’s football divide and has plush suede uppers.

Terminator High by Nike

While the Dunk was designed to mirror the colours of whichever college adopted it, the Terminator – released in the same year, 1985 – was built for one college team and one college team only: the Georgetown Hoyas. After winning the National Championship, Nike presented the team with a shoe that had its name, “Hoyas”, emblazoned across the heel. This was replaced on the model that went on general release with the brand’s name, giving the shoe the nickname “Big Nike”. If the Dunk’s adaptability is part of the reason for its ubiquity, then perhaps the Terminator’s strong association with one college is an indication of why today it is a relatively rare sight. Now it is back (to reference a sci-fi franchise of a similar vintage, it said it would be), and in a rather dashing Swan and contrasting Noble Green.

Samba OG by adidas Originals

Should you find yourself skittering about on icy turf this month, these could be the sneakers for you. Originally introduced in 1950 to allow footballers to dart about on frozen training grounds, the Samba went on to become adidas’s second-best selling model after the Stan Smith. Its appeal is not limited to the football pitch. This iconic shoe has been worn by cultural icons from the Queen frontman Mr Freddie Mercury to Renton in Trainspotting, via Glenn in The Walking Dead and Earn in Atlanta. This reissue in black leather with suede overlays, white details and a gum sole, however, is perhaps the best representation of the shoe.
