Have Fun With Some New Season AMIRI

Words by Ms Molly Isabella Smith

A blood-red tux, bone-decorated varsity jacket and tees with prints of darkness – all inspired by The Lost Boys.

The fashion world is accused, on occasion, of taking itself too seriously. And, loathe as we are to admit it, there are a few times in sartorial history when designers have been found guilty of the charge (we’re looking at you, 1990s minimalism). However, what with its ugly sneakersbum bags and Guccification, 2018 is not one of those times. At this more-is-more moment, a handful of brands are having a whole lot of fun.

One of them is AMIRI – a four-year-old label helmed by Mr Mike Amiri, whose designs are a love letter to growing up in Downtown LA and teenage nights spent trying to get past the doorman at The Viper Room on Sunset Boulevard. Ripped denimplaid shirts and leather jackets are already signature fare. The latest collection, key pieces from which land on MR PORTER today, is best described as a glam-rock bacchanalia based on the camp 1980s classic The Lost Boys. If you’re wondering how a vampiric theme manifests in the clothes, we’ve got one word for you: glitter. And lots of it. Glittery jeans. Glittery leather. Even glittery boots all made a shimmering appearance at the brand’s AW18 Paris show. And, for those averse to the sparkly stuff, there’s also a blood-red tuxedo in luxe velvet, a Sgt Pepper meets My Chemical Romance-esque military jacket with macabre bone details and enough skinny jeans to make Mr Hedi Slimane wince.

But don’t let all that fun make you think the fashion is fast. The label is famed for the artisanal approach it takes to its craft. Everything is handmade, hand-embellished and, of course, hand-glittered at the Los Angeles atelier. As you can probably imagine then, there’s a price tag to match. But, hey, if you’ve got it, we highly recommend you flaunt it.
