September gets a rough deal. We tend to see it as the beginning of the end: the last chance to wear that silly shirt you bought in May, or a closing window of outdoor opportunity. But in truth, September is one of the greatest months for menswear because its arrival heralds autumn, which in turn brings the best clothes and styling opportunities. Layering, texture, big coats, oh my!
As the great F Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, “life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” Just be sure to consult our guide to the season’s new essentials, first.
01. The AGOLDE jeans
Let’s kick off with probably the most essential of all autumn essentials: a great pair of jeans. These are by dependable denim brand AGOLDE and have that classic faded blue finish. They are cut wider in the leg than your average pair, with single pleats at the pockets – two key details in the all the coolest jeans right now. And they’re made with regenerative cotton, hence you’ll find them in our Consciously Crafted edit, so they’re easier on the planet, too.
02. The Dries Van Noten overcoat
One of the great joys of autumn dressing is when it gets cold enough to bust out a great big coat, and few are greater (literally and figuratively) than this tweed overcoat by Dries Van Noten. Inspired by the aesthetics of American writer William S Burroughs, it feels as if it could have been lifted straight from mid-century Greenwich Village, but it will more than hold its own in the sartorial rigours of 2025.
03. The Sacai polo sweater
It feels as if the simple polo sweater – defined by a collared neck, like a polo shirt – has recently ascended to the position of ubiquitous essential. For AW25, Japanese brand Sacai has interpreted the style in pure green wool and added subtle elevated detailing in the form of ribbed edging and chunky, hidden buttons. Master effortless polish by styling it with a pair of simple wool trousers and Derby shoes.
04. The Common Projects sneakers
Few brands do minimal style quite as well as Common Projects, but the American brand’s Bball sneaker is slightly more detailed than its cult Achilles design. With more than a little inspiration from the classic German Army Trainer, the Bball combines white leather with grey suede trim and a gum sole with the IYKYK Common Projects serial number on the heel.
05. The Our Legacy cardigan
For when you need to get a bit cosy, but still look good (date night in a country pub with a crackling fire, let’s say), Our Legacy’s knitwear collection is ideal. This cardigan’s neat Argyle pattern leans into the modern iteration of preppy Americana and can be easily layered over a shirt when the mercury drops. It features slick shell buttons and hanging thread detailing to shift it away from uninspiring Argyle knits of old.
06. The Mr P. loafers
A take on the classic Penny loafer, minus the penny holder, these leather Mr P. slip-ons are a testament to ascetic design. Cut from burgundy calf leather, they’re the kind of shoe that look as good with denim as they do with tailoring and could probably do the business with white socks and shorts, too.
07. The LOEWE tote bag
The trend for men’s tote bags shows no sign of slowing and why would it when the likes of LOEWE are dropping bangers like this? Cut from pillow-soft suede, it’s big enough for your everyday carry and will work alongside looks at either end of the casual-smart spectrum. Just keep an eye on spillages – hot coffee and pale suede aren’t exactly the best of friends, so you may need to forego your commute flat white to be safe.
08. The Oliver Spencer shirt
One of the UK’s foremost purveyors of fine autumnal wear, Oliver Spencer knows a thing or two about great fabrics and this striped shirt is cut from very lovely fabric indeed. Thanks to a mix of linen and cotton, it’s pleasantly weighty – but not overly so – and cut to be worn untucked and loose. It’s exactly the kind of thing you’ll reach for when you need a do-everything look.
09. The Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses
By far the coolest eyewear brand on the market right now, Jacques Marie Mage manages to fuse a kind of old-school European aesthetic with California insouciance, and these shades are the perfect example. You never know when the sun will come out – yes, even in September – and these angular tortoiseshell frames will pair perfectly with all your autumn neutrals.
10. The Cherry Los Angeles T-shirt
You can never have too many white cotton T-shirts. This one by Cherry Los Angeles pushes the envelope enough to make it interesting, but not so far that you couldn’t wear it with a pair of blue jeans to the pub. Cut for a boxy, off-the-shoulder fit, the design takes inspiration from classic American motor-racing culture.
11. The Officine Générale jacket
One of those great transitional pieces to see you through the indecisive autumn weather, Officine Générale’s Lazlo jacket has the cut and feel of a classic denim trucker, with the heft you need to stave off a brisk wind. Cut from chocolate-brown suede, it’s smarter than a denim trucker, too. If you want to go full Parisian chic (as per the brand), wear it with skinny trousers, point-toe boots and a tie.
