Unless you permanently reside in a land where palm trees and air-con are the norm, you may have noticed a proliferation of shearling outerwear over the past few winters. While it may have once had a dubious reputation thanks to a certain Del Boy Trotter, this season, it’s less cockney wheeler-dealer, more flying ace – with some streetwise clout thrown in for good measure. Here are five of our favourite shearling jackets to cosy up in right now, because baby, it’s still cold outside.

Acne Studio’s urban flyboy
Whether it’s clean-lined furniture or forward-thinking fashion, we’re all aware that Scandinavians don’t do design by halves. Stockholm’s Acne Studios – whose name, appropriately, is an acronym for “Ambition to Create Novel Expressions” – is a prime example. Its heavyweight shearling jacket may take its cues from the B-3 bomber jacket issued to 1940s US Air Force pilots, but its inky-black hue ensures it won’t see conflict with anything in your existing wardrobe.

Mr P.’s cloud-soft wardrobe staple
We might be a little biased given it’s come off the drawing board of our very own in-house label, but the impossibly soft handle of this shearling jacket by Mr P. speaks for itself. And beyond that plush, tactile surface, it has all the hallmarks of a piece built to go the distance – from its fine Italian stitching to the solid two-way zip. As for that sage-green hue, it’s a subtle yet quietly elegant alternative to ubiquitous brown and black.

Although Paris label Yves Salomon’s pedigree harks back to 1920, it’s not a brand to rest on its laurels, with a creative nous that feels consistently fresh. What has remained is its commitment to sourcing the finest natural materials to produce its covetable outwear. This jacket, for example, is made from a silky-soft yet hardy lamb leather and fully lined in pleasingly fluffy shearling, which will have it at the top of any discerning dresser’s Wish List.

If you wanted proof of Mr Tom Ford’s uncompromising approach to luxury, you’ll find it in every seam and stitch of this shearling bomber. Assembled by skilled hands in Italy – a nation renowned for the quality of its hides – it has a preppiness that recalls classic varsity jackets. Its appealing milky hue will turn heads for all the right reasons. But you’ll definitely want to keep it well away from grubby fingers.

The Hollywood-approved Kingsman flight jacket
In a particularly memorable scene in 2021’s The King’s Man, gentleman spymaster, the Duke of Oxford – played by Mr Ralph Fiennes – duals with his foes in a rather slick leather aviator jacket. This British-made design from the franchise’s official label is inspired by the on-screen wardrobe of the film’s protagonists. Because alongside manners, a well-made shearling jacket maketh the man.
