Romance isn’t really a concept traditionally associated with menswear. This season, though, designers seemed to ask themselves, what would happen if we decided to relax the rules a bit? If, instead of limiting ourselves to clean lines and classic cuts, we experimented with softer fabrics and cuts that have yet to play a starring role in our wardrobes? We were treated to collections filled with languid, bohemian-inspired tailoring, louche silk shirts and voluminous pleated trousers. Don’t get us wrong, we’re still a big fan of fashion without frills: our recent infatuation with utility and alpine trends shows just how much we prize practicality when it comes to what we wear. But we’re also firmly of the opinion that men should possess multi-faceted wardrobes, and that includes a ruff or two. Here’s how to swipe right on the trend we’re falling for this season.

One facet of the modern romance trend is opulence, and this really shines where formalwear is concerned. Quite literally in some cases. Silk and satin, as per this sleek TOM FORD suit, are fast becoming more commonplace in tailoring; so are lush velvet and patterned jacquards as men begin to bend the rules of eveningwear. And though a standout suit is strictly something to try after hours, don’t be afraid to mix and match with a few casual pieces to incorporate softer elements of texture – a cashmere sweater, for example.

Who would have thought the humble shirt would go from zero to hero in the space of a year? Thanks to the Herculean efforts of Gucci muse Mr Harry Styles – whose tattoo-baring sheer ensemble at the Met Gala back in May serves as the prototype for this trend – they’ve been transformed into a wardrobe centrepiece in recent months. To be clear, we’re not referring to just any old shirt here: your poplin button-down isn’t going to cut it. The shirts grabbing our attention this season are made of satin, velvet and even gauzy transparent fabrics and/or embellished with embroidery, ruffles and elaborate cuffs to name but a few.

The modern romance trend’s spiritual era is the 1970s – when menswear was equal parts peacocking and flower power. Aside from incorporating anything flared, velvet and wide-lapelled into your repertoire, the easiest way to channel the sepia-tinged decade is to pay particular attention to the details: namely, your accessories and shoes. Gucci’s horsebit loafers (though, really, anything Gucci will fly here) are the most obvious choice, though opt for a chocolate brown pair as opposed to black for the most authentic take, and invest in some jewellery: bangles, chains and rings. The more bling, the better.
