THE JOURNAL

Each month, we run a roundup of some of the best-dressed men on Earth. But this month, in honour of Venus, perhaps, we decided to highlight the best-dressed couples. That’s right. Ahead of Valentine’s Day, we caught the most stylish, most loved-up pairs as they strolled down the street on their way to a hot date or sauntered elegantly through an airport. Given that January tends to be the most unromantic month – cold, wet, dark as it is – these couples brought a little warmth and romance when we needed it most.
Ms Kate Bosworth and Mr Michael Polish

This classic Hollywood pairing (hot director-hot actor) make matchy-dressing look fairly straightforward. Indeed, Mr Michael Polish and Ms Kate Bosworth prove that head-to-toe black is far from boring when you have someone attractive on your arm. Interpret that statement however you will – it works both ways. The key to not blending into the background is playing with texture, which these two have done perfectly. Ms Bosworth’s lush velvet is contrasted by Mr Polish’s slick leather jacket. And it doesn’t hurt if you and your partner both have cheekbones that can cut ice.
Ms Victoria Beckham and Mr David Beckham

Well, OK, it’s not very hard for Mr David and Ms Victoria Beckham to look stylish, is it? They’ve been doing it for years. But something about the way their tones mesh together here, as they head to the Gare du Nord in Paris, is indicative of just how long they’ve been appearing in various locations looking good in unison. Look closely and you’ll notice that each of them has a little detail that takes their outfit from good to great. Ms Beckham’s coat has an ultra-flattering, off-kilter belt (not to mention the lemon rollneck). Mr Beckham is carrying not only a luxurious Bottega Veneta duffel, but also a tiny cross-body bag. These things look thrown on, but there is no doubt in our minds that they are entirely intentional.
Ms Helen Lasichanh and Mr Pharrell Williams

How is it fair that the coolest couple in Los Angeles also seem to be ageing in reverse? Here, Ms Helen Lasichanh and Mr Pharrell Williams are in Paris attending the Chanel couture show, but they could just as easily be, we don’t know, graduating from university. Anyway, moving on. Mr Williams is classic Mr Williams here, all skateboard shapes and clean lines. Ms Lasichanh is wearing the mother of all coats (and some delightful mules as well). They are a study in contrasts, but it works for them.
Mr Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Mr Justin Mikita

If there is one thing we love at MR PORTER, it’s styling a suit with a rollneck. How lucky for us, then, that this duo have chosen to do just that. The actor Mr Jesse Tyler Ferguson kept his outfit tonal, selecting a sweater just a shade or two off from his relaxed corduroy suit, while his husband Mr Justin Mikita went for contrast. While we may question Mr Mikita’s lack of socks, considering the couple were photographed in the ski-season hotspot of Park City, Utah, during the Sundance Festival, we’ll let it slide just this once since they do look lovely and warm together.
Ms Jodie Turner-Smith and Mr Joshua Jackson

Actor Mr Joshua Jackson has long served as a quiet style foil to his well-dressed companions. For example, he was often spotted in a simple suit next to Ms Diane Kruger in couture. These days, the well-attired lady in question is his wife, model and actor Ms Jodie Turner-Smith, who is pregnant with their first child and wearing the hell out of this drapey cream coat, heels and 1970s-inspired glasses. Mr Jackson is, by comparison, slightly rumpled, but in an artful way, as if to say, “Don’t look at me, look at her.” And the way he is holding her hand, as though to provide some stability as she navigates the cobbles, is old-school gentlemanly. We must admit we love a supportive spouse.
Mr Rami Malek and Ms Lucy Boynton

You wouldn’t know it from these couples, but it can be difficult to look stylish in January, especially if you live in a city in the Northern Hemisphere, such as New York, where freezing temperatures make leaving the house an ordeal. However, actors Ms Lucy Boynton and Mr Rami Malek seem to be braving the chill with ease, thanks to some stylish Prada boots (her) and a dapper topcoat (him). His and hers checks were a perhaps unintentional coincidence, but the effect is a charming pick-me-up in the darkest of months.
Mr Alasdhair Willis and Ms Stella McCartney

Talk about a fashion power couple dressing the part. Here, in St Moritz, Ms Stella McCartney and Mr Alasdhair Willis are simply old-school glamour (with a touch of the abominable snowman). If you’re surrounded by pure white snow, why not stand out in classic knits and midnight outerwear, or really go for it in a (surely faux) furry coat and seriously voluminous boots? Turns out cosy and stylish are not so far apart after all.
Mr Justin Bieber and Ms Hailey Bieber

It’s only right that we end roughly where we began, with a couple embracing the all-black matching look, only this time it’s the Biebers on the streets of LA. Given their youth and beauty, it’s almost a foregone conclusion that anything these newlyweds throw on will look cool and probably start a trend. Sweatshorts over leggings? Why not? What appears to be a raw silk modified ski-set? Sure. These kids can do no wrong.
