The Gifts That Last Longer Than A Lifetime

MR PORTER’s guide to the Christmas presents that keep on giving.

To borrow fashion parlance, frivolous gifts are so 15 years ago. Pre-global financial crisis, nothing said “Merry Christmas” quite like a £5,000 bottle of champagne, diamond-encrusted tape dispenser or a souped-up water car (Google it). Now, though, in a world that’s “woke” to the flaws of Bugatti-fast consumerism, such dizzily extravagant presents don’t carry quite the same sheen.

So, what to get instead? The gifts that keep on giving, of course. This festive season, swap flash-in-the-pan favours for tokens they’ll treasure for years to come (and possibly hand on as heirlooms). Here’s our pick of the presents with staying power, and the kits to keep them pristine.

This 25 December, why not give the gift of haute horlogerie and a hobby to boot? Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Art Deco-inspired Reverso Duoface, a glorious combination of steel and alligator leather, offers a man’s wrist the kind of future-proof style only a masterfully crafted Swiss watch can, while Lorenzi Milano’s finely appointed repair kit gives him all the tools he needs to keep it ticking.

Purists will balk at the idea of subjecting a £7,000 watch to one’s own dithery DIY attempts, but learn how to deploy these Italian-made instruments correctly and you could save yourself a professional servicing that, depending on the manufacturer of your timepiece, could leave your wrist stripped bare for six months or more. Not to mention your wallet.

In a footwear market swamped with endless sneaker drops, there’s a certain comfort in returning to the classics. Most sneakers – no matter how long you had to queue/how many bots you had to design to snag them – couldn’t muster a fraction of the durability offered by a pair of well-made leather shoes.

Take these John Lobb double monk-straps, for example, as stylish today as when Mr Lobb first started cobbling them in the late 1800s. Handmade in England, they’re crafted from the finest grained leather for a peerless finish that’ll look the part at workweddings and all those other important life events where sneakers, no matter how grail, will never quite cut it.

Keep them fighting fit with Berluti’s shoe care kit, a luxurious felt pouch filled to the brim with conditioning creams, brushes, cloths and everything else you need to keep your ones and twos tip-top.

What could be better than unwrapping a Burberry trench coat on Christmas morning? Unwrapping two, obviously. Treat a loved one to this innovative piece of outerwear this holiday season and they’ll be able to choose between classic beige on one side and the British brand’s time-honoured check on the other. Which, we suppose, makes you doubly generous.

Like its WWI forebears, this coat is built to last. Cut from sturdy gabardine, a tough, tightly woven cotton fabric invented by Mr Thomas Burberry for soldiers fighting on the front line, it boasts a sleek and elegant silhouette that belies some serious substance. Plus, there’s never been a better time to invest in a classic Burberry design. Despite the iconic pattern’s, er, checkered past through the early 2000s, it’s once again the height of style – proof positive that this piece, a MR PORTER exclusive, is primed to weather even the most extreme tides of fashion.

Keep yours battle ready with The Laundress garment care kit. Stocked with pleasantly scented stain remover and freshening spray, as well as a Crease Release solution for instant de-wrinkling, it’s a sartorial lifesaver.
