Empress Of, The Range, Kaytranda and the other tracks guaranteed to soundtrack the start of your summer.
Spring has sprung. All change. This mantra of course applies to your wardrobe (who wants to walk along the increasingly sunny streets in one of winter’s heavy wool topcoats?), but also to your music tastes. With this in mind, we at MR PORTER have scoured the internet buzz-o-sphere looking for a fresh selection of music to accompany all your spring cleaning, sweater airing, and style rejuvenating activities in the coming month. After all, do you think Mr Kanye West would make the difficult choice between a souvenir jacket and a light suede bomber listening to an old playlist? No way. Here, then, are five up-and-coming artists who are sure to suck up most of your bandwidth in the coming months, along with an exhaustive selection of 20 tracks to get you into a spring state of mind.

THE RANGE

A true internet artist, The Range creates music by sampling and remixing obscure videos from the darkest corners of YouTube. In anyone else’s hands, twisting amateur cover versions of songs by Ms Ariana Grande would be a sonic mess, but The Range skillfully extracts beauty from such unlikely sources. “Every song tries to acknowledge a sense of vulnerability or difficulty in life, as well as an intense drive to cope with problems in ways that don’t drag you into the abyss,” he says. The Range’s second album, Potential, is out now on Domino.

EMPRESS OF

If you like Grimes, you’ll love Empress Of. Coming just six months after the release of Me, her hypnotic debut album, “Woman Is A Word” is a synth-pop call to arms for the gender-fluid generation. Showing off her minimal but highly #Empressive production skills, it will worm its way into your head and take up squatter’s rights, just as “Kitty Kat” and “Water Water” did last year. Having also just released new single “Reformer”, a collaboration with electronic dance duo Darkstar, Empress Of looks destined to reign over us for the foreseeable future. We hereby pledge our allegiance.

Kaytranada

We’re 99.9 per cent sure that Kaytranada’s debut album is going to be the soundtrack of the summer. Why? Because his Boiler Room sets are already the stuff of legend, his remix of Flume’s “Holdin On” never fails to get a party started, and he’s been signed by XL Recordings – the label that brought us The Prodigy, The White Stripes and Dizzee Rascal. Oh, and he’s also called the album 99.9%. The vinyl version comes with a sheet of temporary tattoos, so you can make yourself look even more masculine. Jump on Kaytranada’s fun bus this May.

BAAUER

Baauer, the man responsible for breaking the internet in with 2012’s “Harlem Shake”, is back with impressive new album Aa, packed with cameos from rappers like Future, Novelist and Pusha T. Our prime cut is “Temple”, an Eastern-influenced trap anthem, which features MIA and Karl Lagerfeld’s favourite K-pop star, G-Dragon, trading rhymes back and forth. It makes us want to throw a massive party and then meditate for a month.
"Boy"
BOYBOY

Not much is known about BOYBOY, except that he was born in New Zealand, lives in LA and has only released two tracks to date. Updating Scritti Politti’s formula for the Tumblr era, BOYBOY’s laid-back sounds will appeal to fans of Thundercat, Flying Lotus and Nite Jewel. “Boy” is our favourite, but “None of Your Love” is worth checking out, too. We can’t wait to hear what the new boy on the block has up his sleeve next.
