You Asked: How Can I Get Glowing Skin (Without The Grease)?

Words by Mr Ashley Clarke

The grooming products your mates will be asking about down the pub.

This week, we did something we’ve never done before: we put a call-out on Instagram for grooming-related questions, and the response was rather overwhelming. Although not, perhaps, surprising. For chaps who like to move through life well groomed, finding products that work well isn’t always as easy as asking your mates for recommendations. Any lotions and potions we use to keep ourselves looking sharp, stay shut away in the bathroom cabinet, and which moisturiser you’re loving at the moment isn’t typical pub talk, after all. The result, then, is that a lot of us have no idea. Thankfully, we at MR PORTER are au fait with what makes a difference grooming-wise and what doesn’t, and this week we’re answering the question of how to get brighter skin without looking like an oil slick. Of course, we can’t answer all of your queries at once, so keep your eyes peeled on The Daily over the coming weeks where we’ll address your concerns.

I want brighter skin without looking greasy. Any recommendations?

Ah, bright, glowing and healthy skin. An immediate signifier of youth, and the apparent preserve of Korean boyband members who sport the dewy, worriless faces of seraphs. You might expect that kind of plumped, healthful look is impossible to achieve without weekly facials and a dermatologist on speed dial, but there are a couple of easy additions you can make to your washbag that will do the trick.

The key, as you’ve said, is to get skin that looks glowing but not greasy, so slapping on an extra layer of moisturiser won’t work. Instead, you want to boost moisture in more effective ways. For that, start with a hyaluronic serum. A quick science crib sheet – hyaluronic molecules are what keeps moisture locked in the skin, and therefore by using a dedicated serum, you can boost these molecules – exactly what you need to achieve that hydrated, lit-from-within effect. Dr Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Serum is the gold standard – it feels slightly sticky when first applied (after cleansing and before a moisturiser), but sinks into skin within seconds and makes skin look immediately more lambent.

Follow with a kind but effective moisturiser – Dr Dennis Gross’ Hyaluronic Marine Moisture Cushion (are you noticing the pattern of ingredients?) works fantastically well because it’s oil-free, so won’t leave you looking greasy. If you need a general brightness-booster, give Sisley – Paris’ Black Rose Cream Mask a go – put it on two or three times a week for 15 minutes to keep skin looking nourished. And, the final secret ingredient for K-pop-level skin? Tinted moisturiser. Perricone MD does a fantastic Face Finishing Moisturiser Tint that will adapt to any skin tone or colour, and will give you an instant glow that will make you look imminently healthier – whether you feel it or not.

So, there you have it. The next time you show up to the pub you’ll be positively glowing – if your mates ask you why you look so good, well, you can tell them MR PORTER sent you.
