Longtime followers of the vicissitudes of fashion may recall a time, in the dark and distant 2000s, at which British luxury brand Burberry went to great lengths to distance itself from its trademark check pattern. The feeling was, via proliferating fakes and the market-stall traders who sold them, that the house signature had become devalued, and was being worn willy-nilly by youths roaming streets across the country.
Oh, how things change, eh? Now, here we are in 2018: streetwear is the dominant trend, and rather than raising our eyebrows at track pants, sneakers, caps and logo-print T-shirts, we’re all desperately trying to scoop up as many of them as we possibly can. It’s a smart and timely move, therefore, for Burberry to reinvent this formerly maligned chapter of its own heritage in its February 2018 collection, which made its debut just minutes ago at London Fashion Week.
In this exuberant offering, not only can you find various pieces of covetable outerwear, shirting, shoes and accessories rendered entirely in the Burberry check (similar pieces co-designed with the Russian fashion designer Mr Gosha Rubchinskiy last winter sold out almost instantly, so you might want to act fast), but a range of wry sweats and T-shirts which unearth various Burberry logotype executions from the house’s vast and, evidently, rich archive. Best of all, you don’t have to wait for it: as if by magic, it’s available to buy right away on MR PORTER. Scroll down for a selection of pieces, or shop the full edit here.
