THE JOURNAL

Looking for a gift for the father, or father figure, in your life? Trying to find something he doesn’t already have and will actually like? Excellent, you’re in the right place. We’ve moved beyond the cliché stock dad gifts – ties, cufflinks, etc (although, honestly, some men love these, so use your discretion) – and onto more personalised gifts that they will genuinely be excited to open.
Have a little think about the daddy in question. What are his likes and dislikes? Is he an indoors or an outdoors man? A tech head, a watch nerd? Whomever you’re buying for, there’s a gift for him at MR PORTER. See below for our top picks.
01.
The gnarly surfer dad

Does dad love the beach? The sun and the waves, the crunch of sand, the tacky feel of sunblock at the end of the day? Get him some bits to upgrade his beach days. The first thing we recommend is a beautiful beach towel from Cleverly Laundry, which is a big step up from the ratty old bath towels that have been relegated to outdoors use. Build from there with sleek swimming trunks or natty sunglasses and serve it all with a margarita for extra flair.
02.
The early adopter tech dad

Otherwise known as gadget dad, the tech dad loves a bit of new hardware. Master & Dynamic wireless headphones will have him grinning from ear to ear – sleek and quite good looking. Speaking of, how about some transparent speakers from the appropriately named Transparent Sound or a future perfect portable speaker from Devialet? Dad will be the envy of all his little audiophile friends.
03.
The intrepid travelling dad

Dads on the go need accessories that will both remind them of home and look elegant while in transit. A classic billfold wallet from Mulberry fits the, ahem, bill here. If you’re looking for a larger token of your affection – Métier makes a leather tote ideal for commutes while Brunello Cucinelli provides a duffel for stylish overnights.
04.
The stay-at-home dad

Got a homebody or entertainer in the family? Best to get him something that he can show off. Soho Home’s tasselled throw looks very stylish tossed over the corner of sofa or as adornment in a guest room. If your old man is a wine man, a developer from L’Atelier du Vin maybe more to his taste. When in doubt, however, a candle is a safe bet. LOEWE Home Scents makes a honeysuckle fragrance that smells as good as it looks. Don’t believe the haters that say candles aren’t a good gift – they may in fact be the best gift.
05.
The dad who has everything

Perhaps your father already buys himself everything he wants and needs – which is a lovely way to live, but not so lovely for his children on Father’s Day. Time to go for silly luxury. Start with Assouline’s Athens Riviera book (to inspire the next vacation, perhaps) and work your way up to Amalgam Collection’s Aston Martin model car. Not out-there enough? Get him a true treasure he can gaze at for hours on end: a Bellerby & Co Globemakers mini desk globe.
06.
The time-keeping watch dad

Here’s where you can think about what you might like to inherit one day and choose accordingly. Or, we suppose, you can buy him what he would like, but perhaps best if you can find one that does both. Cartier’s Ballon Blue de Cartier is a classic that will hold up. If he likes a timepiece with a bit more trendiness to it, go for an all-black watch from Hermès Timepieces. Now, if he’s a performance watch guy, an IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot’s Automatic watch is where you want to land.
07.
The laid-back dad

May we all reach the age at which tying our shoelaces is simply one step too far. If your father has achieved this phase of life (or simply prefers summer shoes that are easy and pack well), then get him some luxurious slip-ons. We’re partial to the Arizona-style sea-foam sandals from our in-house label, Mr P., which are made from sustainable regenerated suede. But Loro Piana makes some elegant espadrilles and Officine Creative some classic boat shoes that serve a look as well.
08.
The still-got-it cool dad

We believe that jewellery for men is truly on the up and up with designers catching on that men like a little accessorising just as much as women do. Some dads already have the ability to toss on a little fine jewellery and look fantastic, while others may need a nudge in the right direction. Either way, this simple 18-karat gold cuff from Laud is an easy piece to incorporate into any collection. Carolina Bucci’s cult Forte beads are a little more fun while an 18-karat rose-gold ring from Piaget will truly never go out of style.
