THE JOURNAL

“Happiness is a warm puppy,” legendary cartoonist Mr Charles M Schulz once noted, immortalised as the title of his bestselling 1962 gift book. Could five words be packed with better intentions? But it was this phrase, by way of a headline in the May 1968 issue of American Rifleman, the official monthly magazine distributed to members of the NRA – which somehow found its way into the hands of Sir George Martin – that gave its name to the song “Happiness Is A Warm Gun” from The Beatles’ eponymous 1968 double album, aka “The White Album”. (This of course was the same record that, according to Mr Charles Manson, foretold a bloody race war, an interpretation that led Mr Manson to oversee the murder of actor Ms Sharon Tate and four of her house guests, suggesting that Mr Schulz isn’t the only one here to have his words misquoted and taken entirely out of context.)
Of course, Mr Schulz made no mention of a firearm. But, confusingly, he wasn’t necessarily talking about a literal (or even illustrated) canine either. “‘Happiness is a warm puppy’ is essentially a way of saying ‘happiness is simple’,” he later confirmed. “Satisfaction is a moment that you experience with whatever your ‘warm puppy’ is,” he continued, listing backyard swings, family dinners and freshly baked cookies (but notably not rifles) as potential moderately hot dogs.
Receiving one of these figurines (officially Ultra Detail Figures, or UDFs) by Japanese toy store MediCom, which land on the site today, would certainly count towards your daily dose of warm puppy. The collectibles emporium behind the BE@RBRICK line, also available on MR PORTER, is known for its limited-edition collaborations with everyone from Disney to Undercover to, them again, The Beatles, and here has locked in on Mr Schulz’s ever-enduring (and endearing) comic strip series, Peanuts. Captured in plastic form are some of the cartoonist’s best-loved characters, including Charlie Brown (in his Sunday-best red rather than the traditional yellow), Linus and, of course, the balmiest of beagles, Snoopy. In each, you have around 8cm of pure, unadulterated joy.
“Find the satisfaction of enough,” Mr Schulz said. “Find your warm puppy.” And, given the value of some of the items that we also stock elsewhere, these collectibles are, in comparison, peanuts.
