THE JOURNAL

And we’re there, meteorologically speaking, at least. Summer officially starts today, so you better be dressed for it. Our hottest take for the warmer months? Well, we know that the clothes we wear can have a dramatic impact on the way we think and behave as well as the way we look. (It’s called “enclothed cognition”.) Therefore, if you’re decked out like you’re summering on a superyacht moored off a shimmering Greek island, then in your head you’re already there. Start your vacation early. Switch off – by putting these clothes on.
The Zegna linen shirt

A weight off your shoulders, Zegna’s Oasi range is spun from sustainable materials that are locally sourced. That the material in question is an ultra-soft, incredibly breathable linen of course helps, too. This mandarin-collar white shirt is an effortless piece made – in Italy – for any occasion this summer.
The Dries Van Noten leather and suede sandals

In an ideal world, we’d want to spend the summer barefoot. But even at the top-most destinations, this isn’t always an option. You can ensure the ground is spotless, but can you stop the sun from heating the travertine tiles around the pool? Or sidestep the restaurant’s dress code, which reasons that shoes should be worn? The next best thing is footwear that almost isn’t there, such as these refined and pleasingly minimal leather and suede sandals from Dries Van Noten.
The LOEWE cotton-blend shorts

LOEWE’s annual collaborative project with the revered Balearic boutique Paula’s Ibiza is usually a chance for the Spanish power brand to let its hair down. This pair of shorts is, by comparison, fairly strait-laced – and even straight-legged. Made from a blend of cotton and technical fabric, they’re ready for anything, with a mid-length cut that will suit most gams.
The Cutler and Gross acetate aviator sunglasses

We have it in our heads that looking cool is as easy as popping a pair of sunglasses on our heads. Not so fast. As with everything else you wear, you’ll want to find something that suits you first. For a gauge of the sunglasses styles that would fit your face, see our guide here. But as a rule of thumb, D-frame and aviator shapes work for most of us. So this GR15 pair by Cutler and Gross, which sits somewhere between the two – and comes in a universally complementary shade of brown – is a very safe bet.
The SAINT LAURENT straight-leg jeans

“I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans,” Yves Saint Laurent once said. “The most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes.” If that sounds like a vibe you’d want in your own summer wardrobe, make like the legendary designer and stick on some light-wash denim that bears his name.
The Gucci monogrammed tote bag

Ahead of our summer vacations, we spend a lot of time thinking about what we plan to pack in our bags. Yet, we spend considerably less time thinking about the bags themselves. Thankfully, this summer, Gucci has done that for us with this Italian-made canvas tote. It features the signature monogram, a sturdy shoulder strap and a zipped pocket for a passport or wallet – as well as ample space for a laptop amid its stylishly slouchy shape.
The Auralee herringbone wool blouson

The Our Legacy linen and cotton-blend sweater

While we might question her life choices, we can’t help admiring the slouchy style of Euphoria’s Rue. So, while this V-neck sweater by Our Legacy – also called Rue – is out of her reach, it has some of that same slacker energy (or lack of). It has however been designed to mould itself to your frame, so think of it more as an extension of you.
The Bottega Veneta suede loafers

The loafer has pitched itself as the versatile shoe for all occasions, both casual and smart – plus, inevitably, those that sit between the two. But for summer? Possibly a step too far. For a breezier take on this footwear, slip into this handsome Palazzo silhouette by Bottega Veneta, rendered from the brand’s signature intrecciato woven suede. They will take you wherever you’re going.
