The plaid pieces to put on your wish list this week.

As far as patterns in menswear go, checks, plaids and tartans are among the few that you can file under “perennial favourites”. On the other hand, there are only so many iterations of the same thing a man can own. Which is why it’s gratifying, for autumn/winter 2017, to see so many interesting twists on the formula, from reinvented grunge classics to cut-and-paste plaids that take the textile in new directions. Scroll down for our favourite checked pieces from this week’s new arrivals.

This interesting, skewed take on a traditional plaid pattern reminds us a little bit of the dazzle camouflage that covered boats in the US and Royal Navy during WWII, with the key modification that it’s eye-catching rather than blindingly confusing. Be brave and wear it with a sympathetically hued check shirt from Norse Projects. Because the latter features a more enlarged check pattern, they will complement each other rather than clash.

This check overshirt from Los Angeles-based brand Fear of God riffs upon the flannel archetypes much beloved in the 1990s by Mr Kurt Cobain. What’s new about it? Well, there’s the street-worthy oversized cut, for one. Then there’s the neat detail of the contrast denim collar. Given that this is one of the most buzzed brands around, does it even matter? Probably not, but don’t expect it to stick around for long. You can play to its defiantly grungy styling by wearing it with a pair of lightly distressed jeans from Frame.

There’s something wonderfully homespun and charming about Mr Jonathan Anderson’s creations from Loewe, this check jacket – made from a variety of wool plaids – being a case in point. Yes, it’s a sharp, statement piece, with its precise contrast stitching and neatly folded pocket pleats, but it’s also got a cosy feel, thanks to the raw-edged front yoke. Wear it over a cashmere hoodie from James Perse and you’ll be able to withstand anything the coming winter throws at you in style.
