February’s Best Dressed Men

17 March 2016

From Mr David Beckham to Mr Eddie Redmayne – our global roundup of who wore it well last month.

There are lots of things to like about February. There’s the Academy Awards, for one (be sure to read ). There’s New York Fashion Week: Men’s. There’s a tiny, tiny bit of sunshine. But best of all, it’s mercifully short. Which means it might not seem like that long ago since we trawled the red carpets of the world to decide who deserves the title of “best dressed” for the month. Sorry about that. Hopefully, the thought won’t spoil your enjoyment of the following standout outfits. To be honest, as this miniscule month flicked blurrily by, you probably missed them first time round, so it’s high time for a recap.

Mr Charles Dance

When he’s not giving the death-ray glare to his Machiavellian brood as Mr Tywin Lannister in HBO’s Game Of Thrones, Mr Charles Dance, it seems, is a somewhat more buoyant fellow – at least if his eveningwear is anything to go by. Pictured here at the premiere of a no-doubt future classic, Pride + Prejudice + Zombies, Mr Dance offsets his somewhat traditional, but thoroughly well-cut, navy  with a light silk  in a jaunty polka-dot . This adds just the right amount of dandy verve to the whole outfit, and does nothing to uncement his national treasure status.

Mr Charlie Casely-Hayford has got it all going for him: great genes, great taste and, conveniently, , with which he can give the first two attributes a regular workout. Here he is in the middle of such an exertion, looking rather wonderful in a windowpane-check suit with drainpipe . The , worn instead of a , keeps it modern and sophisticated while the chunky-soled  add a punky edge.

Mr David Beckham

Hurrah! It’s  in business mode, a look that’s all the better because the business in question is, according to the image caption, nothing more than attending a dinner party in New York. Look closer, however, and you’ll see that Mr Beckham has made some concessions for the dining room: his  has soft, unstructured shoulders, not the padded, power-lunch variety. There’s also something about the  that’s a bit more fun than it is formal. The only thing missing is a bottle of Mateus rosé, or at least a bunch of chrysanthemums, but maybe the super-famous are beyond such prosaic conventions of hospitality.

It’s always stressful having a birthday party. Where will it be? When should it start? Will people turn up on time? Will it all end in tears after over-consumption of Haribos? Luckily, all such worries proved utterly ill-founded when it came to  party in London last month, attended by the stylish likes of radio presenter . He is pictured here graciously posing in front of our Mr René Magritte-esque wall of floating , in a look that we are constantly extolling, that is, a suit worn with a fine-knit . It’s just as smooth and sophisticated as your traditional shirt-and-tie combo, but it’s also just that little bit more sleek and party-appropriate. The “Very MR PORTER” dress code was clearly taken to heart.

In these tricky, trans-seasonal months, when it might be freezing and sunny and rainy all at the same time, it pays to wear several layers, which you can peel off or pile on according to clemency. Here , sometime model and full-time husband to Ms Olivia Palermo, offers us a masterclass in the layerer’s art, ie, sticking to a limited palette (blue, grey, white) and mixing these few colours in varying intensities. Presumably, if you can pull this off in the same way, you too will be stopped in the middle of a public road and asked to pose for a photo, thus compromising your safety, if not your sartorial kudos.

Mr Matt Smith

It may look like  is standing in a bowling alley here, but that’s really just the lighting – he’s actually at the afterparty for Pride + Prejudice + Zombies (for the record, the studio hasn’t sponsored this edition of On The Town – it just seems to have curated a particularly well-dressed guest list). The wide shoulders and slim trousers of Mr Smith’s  suit do a lot to emphasise his tall, rangy physique, and it fits so well that he’s got little extra to do, accessories-wise, although the brown  are a nice touch. Strike!

Mr Oliver Kumbi

It’s getting to the point where we at MR PORTER are running out of words with which to extol the virtues of . Its ongoing ascendance in the annals of style has spanned the past two seasons and shows no signs of abating as we head into spring 2016. Model Mr Oliver Kumbi, spotted here at Stockholm Fashion Week, is one of the many who are keeping the shearling flag flying across the globe. What’s particularly nice about this look is how he’s made the rich brown colour of his  (and shoes) stand out by going for inner layers of deep indigo. Presumably, he’s also feeling pretty pleased with himself, safe in the knowledge that this jacket will still be cool next winter.

Mr Eddie Redmayne

Much as  never fails to impress with his range of sharply cut suits, we’re particularly impressed with the looks he throws together for gliding past the Nothing To Declare sign.  is by no means easy, yet Mr Redmayne always seems to carry it off with particular panache. This outfit is a case in point – it wants for nothing in terms of simplicity, comfort and versatility, thanks to the slightly oversized camel , which we presume he shrugs off in a single fluid motion as he passes through the security gates, like a jet-set swan.
