THE JOURNAL

Wherever you’re going this summer, set sail to the Basque coast before you pack.
We know, we know. We’re getting ahead of ourselves. While we’ve been enjoying an encouraging glimmer of sunshine in London here at MR PORTER HQ, we’re well aware that at any moment the heavens could open and rain on our sunny, vitamin D-charged optimism (and, this being Britain, they probably will). But for now, at least, the promise of a glorious summer is tantalising enough for us to start contemplating a very serious topic: our warm-weather wardrobes. And since swimwear, you’ll agree, is one its key constituent parts, it was kismet that new brand Atalaye has just washed up on MR PORTER’s shores.
Founded and designed in Biarritz, the label takes its inspiration from the spirit and surrounds of the Basque coast. Though all the cuts are the same – that ideal short-but-not-too-short length that’s near-universally flattering – they come in a series of fittingly picturesque prints, ranging from busy, mid-century style florals to classic nautical stripes. Plus, there are a handful of plain pairs in a duo of tan-enhancing sea blues that are sure to please the pattern-shy. Bonus points also go to the fabric, which is fast-drying, chlorine-resistant, anti-microbial and UV-resistant, as well as comfortable and sharp enough to wear pre- or post-dip with a plain tee or loose linen shirt. Gentleman, start your packing.
