The brand-of-the-moment isn’t quite as difficult to wear as you thought.

It’s all very well being able to identify the most talked about brand of the moment – that is, Mr Demna Gvasalia’s iconoclastic label Vetements – but how do you actually wear it, beyond opting for the top-to-toe look favoured by the superfans and street-style set? This is the challenge we at MR PORTER have set ourselves this Friday morning and, thankfully it’s not as difficult as you might think. Because for all that Vetements goes against the fashion grain, many of its statement pieces are based on archetypes that most men should be pretty much comfortable with – the band T-shirt, the bomber jacket, denim jeans. Just how jarringly eye-popping it all looks depends, of course, on how you wear it. Scroll down for a few tips.

Print designs such as the above, metal-inspired T-shirt are what have given Vetements its reputation for an almost confrontational darkness. But there’s also a pleasing nostalgia to the look. (Think of thrash’s heyday in the 1980s: the hair, the ripped jeans, the pointy guitars!) Channel this throwback style by wearing it with some acid-washed denim jeans from Acne Studios and a pair of white, Marty McFly-style high-tops.

Vetements’ exaggerated proportions might seem a little daunting, but it’s far from the only brand offering them at the moment. In fact, as we move into AW17, you’ll be sure to encounter many of these voluminous items from the likes of Gucci, Fear of God, Raf Simons and more. The trick, therefore, to carrying off this giant flannel shirt, is to pair it with an equally oversized T-shirt that complements its proportions. OK, you may just be too shy to climb into a giant hoodie, or pair of deconstructed, ripped-hem jeans. But everyone can manage a colourful scarf. Vetements’ latest offering in this department, produced in collaboration with Reebok, pleasingly references the two-tone style of a classic football scarf. Wear it with this satin bomber from Acne Studios, and imagine you’re heading to the most trend-led game of two halves that has ever taken place.
