From bright young things to seasoned silver foxes – who wore it best last month.

Optimists: half the year is over, pour yourself a glass of wine. Not long till Christmas, eh? Pessimists: another six months to go, we know it’s a drag, sorry. Whichever way you’re leaning, though, the following round up of this month’s best outfits will give you something else to be happy about/cheer you up. Never let it be said that we at MR PORTER don’t care. Until next month, then…

We wouldn’t tend to advise wearing all-denim, or all one brand, but when it’s your own brand, and, more to the point, when you’re AMI founder Mr Alexandre Mattiussi, we think, on reflection, that you can get away with it. Here the designer is pictured in a typically nonchalant pose at the Paris launch for MR PORTER’s supremely gallic Vive La France project. This, of course, included some new, exclusive products from Mr Matiussi’s own label – but he’s gone here for some of the classic pieces we know and love, including the denim jacket that has become a MR PORTER team favourite.

Many of us in the MR PORTER office did an immediate “add to Wish List” when this fun print shirt from Japanese brand KAPITAL first landed in the “What’s New” section of the site. But it seems that singer-songwriter Mr John Mayer went one step better and actually bought the thing. And doesn’t it look good on him? The lesson: it’s always gratifying to have one’s gut impulses endorsed by a celebrity.

Style Council Member and tireless silver fox Mr John Pearson cooks up a particularly effortless tailored look here via a slim (but not too tight) grey cotton suit, worn with what looks, to our expert eyes, like one of James Perse’s tactile, and pleasingly rumpled white T-shirts. Simple, subtle, and timeless, this is a look that can be copied in confidence throughout the summer months.

Clearly there’s something magic about a colourful name at the moment. One moment we have Mr Blondey McCoy becoming the style icon of London’s ultra-cool skate set, and the other we have the singer Mr Bluey Robinson, pictured here at London Fashion Week Men’s, showing us exactly how you might wear a Kent & Curwen suede jacket, that is, with subtle touches of brown that complement its caramel-y shade. Makes us think, in fact, that we should change our names to Caramely, or Suedey, or something like that – watch this space.

What’s this? A newcomer to the hallowed ranks of the On The Town set? To be honest, we’re not quite sure how we’ve overlooked Mr Andrea Luparelli, of Rome-based, made-to-measure tailors Ripense, up until now. So consider this a public correction, and note how effortlessly Mr Luparelli wore his loose-cut navy suit at this June’s Pitti Uomo trade show. The suit carrier, we have to assume, is not a Vetements-esque anti-fashion statement, but an unashamedly practical addition. To that, we say: long live well cut suits and a bit of common sense.

Another designer who participated in MR PORTER’s Vive La France project, Mr Pierre Maheo of Officine Generale is particularly keen on making clothes that every man will want to wear – this is why he fits all his garments on himself. Longtime fans of Mr Mahéo’s work, we particularly like the way he practices what he preaches, something that was particularly noticeable when he came out to receive applause at the end of his SS19 show this June in Paris. Not for Mr Mahéo the typical fashion designer outfit of jeans, Stan Smiths (or whatever so-uncool-it’s-cool sneaker is currently in vogue) and a black T-shirt – no, instead he went for this lovely summer-appropriate outfit featuring pleated navy chinos and a breezily unbuttoned shirt. It’s so nice when these people make an effort, eh?

The Neopolitan tailor Rubinacci has a very distinct style: wide-pleated trousers, roomy double breasted jackets; extravagantly printed pocket squares; colourfully striped shirts. If you’re wondering how to put it all together, though, you don’t need to look very far from the source, because house scion Mr Luca Rubinacci is something of a walking advert for the brand. Here’s a particularly good outing from the always dependable Mr Rubinacci, in which he tames an eye-catching light brown suit with a judiciously chosen colour palette of blue and burgundy. It’s a job well done, and he knows it – look at that smile on his face.

A rising French star who you may recognise from a recent issue of MR PORTER’s weekly magazine The Journal, Mr Neils Schneider sported a 1980s-inspired look for his appearance at this June’s Acne Studios fashion show, and got away with it. We can imagine this particular ensemble – a daring combo of print shirt, white jeans and navy blazer – being accompanied by a giant cocktail and/or a wide range of Memphis Milano furniture, which makes us very happy indeed.
