The Shoes Every Man Needs For Summer 2018

18 April 2018

From sandals to espadrilles, your warm-weather footwear guide .

We shouldn’t have to tell you that, when we finally make that transition from spring into summer, it’s a good idea to change your shoes for a pair of a lighter composition. And yet, here we are telling you. This is less because we want to dwell on the rather noxious side effects of not doing so (mostly clustered in the olfactory department) and more because we have something special to share: a new collection of summer shoes. Comprising a range of exclusive styles from your favourite brands, alongside reissues that we think belong in every man’s summer wardrobe, this is everything you need to get your feet into holiday mode as the temperature begins to soar. Scroll down for notes on a few of our favourites, and what to wear them with.

We imagine there was a time when, if you’d paid a visit to the Bottega Veneta HQ in Vicenza and blithely informed all those gathered that they would soon be making rubber pool slides, you would have been showered in shocked expectorations of amarone (or whatever delicious thing they might have been quaffing at the time). Yet here are the slides in question, and aren’t they glorious? The Venetian luxury brand has long been in the business of creating slippersdriving shoes and other casual indoor pieces that feature its trademark intrecciato leather, so these are the rare slides that feel like they have something of a pedigree. We recommend wearing them poolside, naturally, but should also point out that you’ll be able to get away with them in town. Just add some light-coloured linen trousers and a chambray overshirt and you should be fine.

John Lobb’s Byrne loafer is a classic style – comfortable, smart and reflecting the brand’s 150 years’ experience in producing men’s footwear in England. This new variation, with a contrast tensile sole, offers a slightly more contemporary take on the shape. What’s more, this particular colour is exclusive to MR PORTER. Wear it with your summer tailoring, or even with jeans and a blazer for your next rooftop terrace do.

Osaka-born, California-based designer Mr Yuki Matsuda pours a huge amount of care and attention into the hand-made shoes he offers via his brand Yuketen, something that shows in these intricately woven leather sandals. Based on a traditional Mexican huarache style, these have been rendered in supremely soft vegetable-tanned chocolate leather and feature adjustable side straps to ensure the perfect fit, as well as flexible Vibram soles for comfortable walking. Wear them with the best of this spring’s workwear: denim jeans, a grandad-collar shirt and a chore jacket.

Another all-American, hand-made brand, Quoddy is renowned for its classic moccasin and boat-shoe styles. This particular model, exclusive to MR PORTER, marries an appealing brown-beige upper with a bright white sole which, in our humble opinion, makes a thing that was originally exceptionally summery even more so. Wear with a pair of chinos and a long-sleeved polo shirt. A boat is not necessarily required, but it’s a nice bonus if you’ve got one. Or can convince a friend to lend you theirs.

It’s not often that you come across a garment that was as fashionable in the 14th century as it is today. We can’t think of any other shoe, beyond the espadrille, that can boast such longevity. And yet there is still room for improvement, it seems. At least, if we’re to go by this recent effort from Mr Tom Ford. Where espadrilles traditionally use the natural colour of their rope soles as a contrast detail, Mr Ford has dyed his grey for a sleeker effect. Where their ancestors might have featured canvas uppers, these opt for an anthracite suede. And while the archetype is not exactly what you might call durable, these feature an additional rubber sole, which makes them far more suitable for urban environments. Wear them with a pair of chino shorts and a striped silk sweater as you lounge about in your garden this summer.
