Top Wallets And Cardholders

How the modern man carries his cash in style.

Yes, it’s true that an increasingly large number of men are choosing to go cash-free, and yes, we’ll probably all be dealing exclusively in contactless Bitcoin transactions using NFC chips embedded into our iPhones within the next decade. But let’s not rush to announce the death of the good, old-fashioned wallet just yet, shall we? Especially not with so many highly desirable examples continuing to arrive on the market.

Whether it’s a billfold, a chest-pocket wallet, a cardholder, a money clip or some combination of all of the above, there are as many options out there as there are ways to pay a bill. To give you a taste of what’s available, we’ve picked out a few options from our favourite brands. Prefer the convenience of a credit card? Then consider a slim-line cardholder. Enjoy the feeling of a few crisp banknotes in your pocket? A money clip is for you. Scroll down for six ways to carry your cash in style.

Granted, you will have slightly less money to clip into it once you’ve actually bought it, but a money clip remains a savvy investment for the modern gent, especially when paired with a slim cardholder. Separate your cards and cash by carrying one in each pocket, and you’ll never again find yourself succumbing to “overstuffed wallet syndrome”. While ultimately a functional item, a money clip can also be rather beautiful; this rose-gold plated, sterling silver money clip, made by Deakin & Francis for MR PORTER’s exclusive Kingsman range, is a case in point.

Pure simplicity from Prada. This full-grain leather cardholder is featureless, but for the enamel plaque bearing the Italian house’s historic insignia. It’s a classic detail that can be found on many of the brand’s accessories and references the triangular locks that feature on its vintage trunks. With an exceptionally slim profile, this is the perfect choice for the man who prefers a minimalist approach to life, free of the old receipts and loyalty cards from out-of-business coffee shops that clog up the average man’s wallet. Those who also carry cash but aren’t willing to overstuff the central compartment of this cardholder might prefer to carry a money clip, too.

Valextra’s sleek pebble-grain leather accessories – which extend beyond cardholders and wallets to include portfolios, briefcases and even carry-on suitcases – have been a long-term obsession in the MR PORTER office. A few years ago, one member of staff was so enamored with a Valextra iPad case that he actually went out and bought an iPad just so he could have the case to put it in. You can see the attraction: the elegant lines and the eye-catching brick-red shade of this cardholder are very typical of the 80-year-old Milanese brand.

Founded by the legendary 20th-century couturier, Mr Cristobal Balenciaga, this Parisian fashion house has come a long way from the sophisticated taffeta gowns and lace cocktail dresses on which its reputation was built. Now, under the creative direction of Mr Demna Gvasalia, the avant-garde Georgian designer and head of the Vetements collective, Balenciaga is better known for its sleek, modern streetwear and highly desirable range of bags and accessories. This studded wallet is something of a signature piece for the brand, its geometric surface and bright cobalt-blue colour elevating it above the ordinary.

It has often been said – and more than once by us – that Berluti treats leather as an artist might treat his canvas. Nowhere is this truer than with the Gaspard range, which features a handmade incision in the leather, a reference to the Italian artist Mr Lucio Fontana, whose Tagli series of slashed canvases rank among his best-known works. In case all of this talk of mid-century abstract art is enough to make you forget that what you’re holding in your hand is an actual, functioning wallet, then you’ll be happy to hear that this exquisite petrol-green billfold also comes with the requisite number of slots and pockets in which to keep your cash and cards organised.

Sized to fit snugly into the internal pocket of a blazer or coat and with space for nine (yes, nine!) cards and four internal pockets in which to store various currencies, this wallet from Bottega Veneta is the perfect option for the international, border-hopping, jet-setting man of the world. And in the label’s signature woven “intrecciatio” leather, it’ll be sure to get the nod of approval in the first-class lounge, too.
