Our style experts answer your most pressing sartorial questions.
We can’t always be shopping to keep up with the latest trends or for the glamorous parties we’ll be attending or investing in high-end brands for our high-powered jobs. Sometimes we just need the basics. Get those right and everything else will follow. This is especially true if you are a student or a younger man. Often, you only need clothes that take you from your house to drinks (and maybe the odd lecture). But that doesn’t mean they don’t require some thought.
Below, we’ve put together a student survival package of everyday essentials. Study it and you can’t fail.

What essentials should the stylish university student have in his wardrobe?

We will need to make some assumptions in order to advise you, if that’s OK, Leo. We are going to assume that, as a university student, you may not have a lot of income at your disposal. Or, if you do – perhaps via a loan or generous parents – you will have to use it for important university things, such as textbooks, seminars and social events. And beer. Lots and lots of beer. It’s unlikely you or your peers have the money to spend on some Brunello Cucinelli Derbies or a Loro Piana shearling coat. However, a quick perusal of your Instagram feed suggests you know how to enjoy the finer things in life when it comes to clothing, so we will try and recommend some things accordingly.
A good place to start if you’re after essentials – clothes that every man should own and that will stand the test of time – is, well, our Essentials page. Not everything will be suitable for the “stylish university student”. You look like you have formalwear nailed down, so let’s focus on some everyday classics. Such as this Breton T-shirt, made by us. Perhaps you’re after some shoes that’ll never go out of style either. These boat shoes by Sperry ought to do the job when you’re hotfooting it from lecture to pub. It’s getting distinctly autumnal now, so you might find yourself pulling on a sweater before you leave the house. If you do actually leave the house. Anyway, why not take a leaf out of Mr Steve McQueen’s book and go for a simple grey sweatshirt, such as this one by Sunspel? No student uniform would be complete without a pair of jeans. Go for some simple, yet quality ones, such as these by Rag & Bone.
Some food for thought, there. If you need any more guidance, feel free to get in touch with our personal shoppers.
