THE JOURNAL

What the MR PORTER team pack in their carry-ons this season – all 100ml or less.
You know the feeling. Your flight’s closing in 10 minutes, you’re fumbling around at airport security, squeezing all your awkwardly sized products into a clear plastic bag, hoping that 120ml tube that’s only 60ml full doesn’t get noticed, and in sweeps a Patrick Bateman doppelganger, whipping out his pre-packed clutch of products and laptop before disappearing in a whirlwind of linen and leather. As his immaculately packed tray rolls up the conveyor belt, you feel about as stylish as a bag of crisps. What’s the takeaway here? It’s worth paying a little more attention to what you select from your bathroom cabinet when you go on holiday. Luckily, MR PORTER’s grooming arsenal is particularly travel-friendly, with plenty of 100ml travel-safe sizes to choose from, not to mention the brands you want to be seen with. Here are the products the team take on holiday.

What’s worse than forgetting your toothbrush? Forgetting the charger for your electric toothbrush. I’ll try my very best not to this year as I plan to eat loads of garlicky prawns and melanzane when I’m in Spain and Greece, which means brushing three times a day at least. On holiday, all that suncream leaves my skin all spotty if I don’t remember to cleanse, cleanse, cleanse. This cleanser by Dr Sebagh works a treat. If it leaves your skin a bit dry, use the brilliant Baxter of California oil-free moisturiser. For me, the Amazingreen fragrance is so redolent of summer, I sometimes wear it in the middle of winter to cheer myself up. It’s all lush palm leaves and fragrant coriander with a punch of green pepper. This set of Comme des Garçons Parfums minis lasts me the whole year and they all come away with me at various times.

This Aesop moisturiser gives you a helping hand achieving a healthy glow when stepping off a long-haul flight, not to mention also making you the best smelling passenger when going through passport control. As for the ultimate style-and-go product, that would be by Patricks, as recommended to me by MR PORTER’s perfectly coiffured US Editor, Mr Dan Rookwood. There’s nothing better for a last-minute touch-up as you ditch your luggage in the hotel and head out to your first meeting. Whether flying long haul to Hong Kong (as I recently did) or short haul to Munich (where I’m headed next week), I always travel with a comb as my hair is wavy and needs regular unknotting. This very English gentlemanly comb keeps my hair on point during and after the flight.

This Allies of Skin Toner Mist is a great product to use when you’re on holiday – two spritzes and your face is covered with a bundle of soothing, perk-i-fying ingredients including aloe, rose water and lots of antioxidants. Which means you don’t have to pack many other bits and pieces. Because of the way air is recirculated through the plane, your skin gets horribly dehydrated when you fly. Opt for a more intense moisturiser than you might normally use. Or, better still, an oil. This example from Tom Ford Beauty is enriched with hydrating essential oils and protective antioxidants, plus it smells lovely. Apply a few drops to your face pre- and in-flight to avoid that airport-zombie effect when you disembark. And this is an SPF face cream with a brilliant texture – it melts wonderfully quickly into the skin. The fragrance is really lovely, too. (Unless, of course, that slightly sickly classic suncream fragrance reminds you of your idyllic childhood paddling in rockpools in some quaint seaside town… Yawn, by the way.)

I’m lucky that my job allows me to travel, but being a family man, I try to be away as few nights as possible on each trip. I always carry hand luggage, so it’s imperative I keep my grooming team sheet concise, but stocked with quick fixes for when I’m straight off the plane and into a meeting. Good hair is a must for someone who works in fashion because, yes, you do get judged. Weird fact: I’m from the generation that trail-blazed the use of moisturisers and I religiously apply twice a day. Having one that doubles up as suncream is a must when you’re in continental Europe and the US at this time of year. I like a scent that lasts throughout the day and Byredo Super Cedar has the body to do just that. Also, a fragrance that “evokes Alpine log cabins” appeals to my inner-mountain-man mindset, and will guarantee a peak performance (sorry).

My top tip to keeping your washbag light and manageable is packing multi-purpose products. This Perricone MD moisturiser has three uses: it keeps my skin hydrated, contains SPF to block out harmful UV rays and is lightly tinted so it hides any remnants of a heavy night out. Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino has been my go-to summer fragrance for years. One spritz is enough to transport me to the Italian Riviera, even if I’m only in Cornwall for a long weekend. I’ve only just started using Christophe Robin’s Moisturizing Hair Cream and now I’m hooked. It’s a light, daily leave-in treatment that prevents my hair from drying and it doesn’t get all sticky in the heat, as some serums and waxes tend to. Packed with barley and apricot kernel oils, it’s like a nourishing meal for my follicles.

Allies of Skin 1A All-Day Mask is my essential travel companion. It’s a leave-on treatment works to regain and retain moisture, which is why I make sure to apply just before a flight. It’s high potency of antioxidants also makes it ideal for looking fresh when acclimatising to different time zones or recovering from one too many drinks the night before. Getting a taste for local cuisine is one thing, but being able to find healthy food on the go is another. So that I don’t fall off the diet wagon completely, when travelling, I take Neat Nutrition’s Advanced Multi Vitamins & Minerals. Two capsules a day and I feel better about that slice of cheese pie. I find my hair and nails grow faster in the sun. Either that or I only have time to notice once I’m off the plane and holed up in a villa. I always pack this air-safe, leather-bound travel manicure set. It’s designed to meet international travel standards, and it’s got all the tools to make sure your nails look white and perfectly buffed when abroad. Now all you need is the sea to bleach them.
