A day in the working life of the AMI designer.
Today, we are pleased to announce the launch of our collaboration with 14 French brands on one exclusive capsule collection. For our Vive La France project, MR PORTER has teamed up with brands such as Officine Generale, Lacoste and Maison Kitsuné to create Gallic-inspired clothes for the modern man. Every day, we will be celebrating a designer we have worked with. First up: we asked CEO and founder of AMI, Mr Alexandre Mattiussi, for the details of his working day. Read what he has to say, below, and scroll down to shop his collection.

The moment I wake up, I’m alive.
I like cracking jokes, talking and sharing my dreams. I wake up at about 7.00 every morning. I have a quick coffee and then I go to the gym for an hour. For the past two years, I’ve been working with a personal trainer. It has changed my life. It gives me the concentration I need for a busy day as a fashion designer.
I wear a lot of my own clothes.
When I design my clothes, I have me in mind. I design for myself. I would wear 90 per cent of my collections. I also wear Nike or adidas trainers, and I wear Cos shirts.
I have a quick breakfast at Claus Paris.
It’s owned by my best friend, Claus Estermann, whom I met 10 years ago at Givenchy. I would also recommend Maison Plisson, close to my store on Boulevard Beaumarchais in Le Marais.
My working day begins at about 10 o’clock.
I might have meetings with my studio team and designers. Every morning we join together and see what we need to do with the collection. We launched a pre-collection last year, so we have four collections for menswear. It’s lots of work, but we try to enjoy what we do.
Lunch will be a business lunch or with a friend.
I often go to Le Petit Célestin on Quai des Célestins close to the River Seine. Then I have meetings again in the afternoon with my team from production, e-commerce and my commercial team.
My office is like a big New York loft space on two floors.
It’s very open. It has nice windows that look onto the street, which is very quiet. We have wooden floors. It’s very clean and graphic. I have a huge, beautiful desk with an Italian lamp from the 1950s. I have books and Interview and Self Service magazines.
A day normally finishes about 7.30pm.
I am never one to work late. I used to when I was at Givenchy or Marc Jacobs, but it’s not productive. You have to organise yourself to leave early. It’s important to have a life and enjoy your friends and family.
Sometimes I go for a drink after work.
I’ll have an aperitif at Le Napoléon, perhaps, which is a bar on the crowded rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. I don’t cook, which I’m a bit embarrassed about, so I’m always out having dinner with my boyfriend. I like Le 52 on rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis.
There are about 70 people in my company.
I am very proud of this. It’s like a family. We just try to do things in our own way. AMI is the story of my life. And I hope I’ll be here for the next 20, 30, 40 years. I try to enjoy every day.
