How To Get Your Summer Fade On

Words by Mr Stuart Husband

8 July 2016

The laidback, washed-out looks for long, lazy days on the beach, by the pool or in the park.

At this stage of the summer, we should all be familiar with that drowsy, even slightly dazed feeling that comes with spending just that little bit too long in the sun (and possibly indulging in one too many mojitos while doing so) – the woozy, not-unpleasurable brain-fade where all we’re aware of is the sound of the surf crashing in, and sliding out, and crashing in, and sliding out, and… sorry, where were we? Oh yes, well, these are the ideal pieces to match that mood: pre-faded, ready-bleached, and heat-hazed to perfection. Scroll down and bask in some faded glory.

This cotton bomber from Japanese brand Remi Relief looks like it was draped over the back of a surf shack bar stool and left to wash out over a scorching summer season; in fact, the sepia-tinted scene illustrates brand founder Mr Yutaka Goto’s passion for California beach culture, and the worn-in style makes it a Big Sur thing when catching some late-season rays and waves. Pair with a similarly languid, sundowner-ready T-shirt, and keep Labor Day at bay.

This baseball kit-inspired cotton-chambray shirt is not only a diamond when it comes to easeful, shrug-on-in-the-mellow-evening-breeze comfort; it also hits it out of the park with its beautifully blanched pale-blue tone. The perfect place to wear it? High in the bleachers, of course. And its perfect partner? This visvim straw hat in traditional cowboy style, prairie-baked and ready to throw some serious shade.

We hear the Sahara’s lovely at this time of year – sun, sand, and, um, sun and sand – but whether you’re on a desert trek or heading for the pool at the Desert Inn, Incotex’s cotton-linen cargo shorts will help you keep your cool. And no, the subtle fading around the pockets and seams isn’t a mirage. While temperatures can plummet out in the dunes at night, Givenchy’s panelled sneakers, with their fuzzy felt lightening into rugged suede, should keep you powering on to the next oasis.
