Three Practical Jackets To Get You Through Springtime

Words by Mr Ashley Clarke

16 March 2018

The jackets that will keep you warm and dry this spring, whatever the weather.

We know it’s insufferably British to bang on about the weather all the time, but this winter is well and truly dragging its heels in 2018. Just when we thought it was time to vacuum pack away our down jackets and crack out the sunglasses, a whisper on the wind has told us it’s supposed to snow this weekend. Who can keep up with such season-ish tomfoolery? It’s bloody mid-March! As our planet is clearly ravaged by climate change, we continue to ask the hard questions: what on earth to wear in such arbitrary times? As fate would have it, our prayers have been answered and numerous weather-hardy (and style-hardy) jackets have landed on MR PORTER this Friday, just in time for spring. Scroll down for tips on when – and how – to wear them.

It’s almost April, and you know what that means. Yes it’s technically Mr TS Eliot’s cruellest month, but to reference the slightly more highbrow poetics of the 1942 Disney classic Bambi, it also means April showers. To protect yourself from the impending rain, you will need a raincoat. This sunny and dependable number from NN07 is made from water- and windproof two-layer nylon, which is roomy enough to comfortably slip a sweater on underneath. This cashmere and cotton one from Studio Nicholson will keep you warm and dry, plus the neutral grey will complement the yellow well. Like the sun shining on a cloudy day.

Appliquéd with NBHDSQUAD on the back (this is what Tokyo-based brand Neighborhood calls its followers), this zip-up fleece jacket is one for the streetwear survivalists. It’s made from pill-resistant Polartec fleece (so no bobbles) that will keep you insulated when it’s chilly, and has faille trims to add a little élan to its country-boy feel. Team it with these camouflage cargo trousers, also from Neighborhood, which have undergone a specialised treatment that means they’ll adapt over time for an authentically worn look that will be perfect for the apocalypse.

Cav Empt’s cotton-corduroy jacket might not be the most weather-wearing item in the bunch, but it looks sharply on-trend and will provide a layer of warmth through the milder transitional months. It has large practical front pockets and a small emblem from the brand sewed onto the arm, and we think it will look particularly good with these white jeans from our in-house brand Mr P., especially when the weather starts to look up. As a small orphaned redhead once opined, the sun will come out tomorrow.
