The foundations to help you build your new-season wardrobe.
Sometimes, it’s important to go back to basics. It may not be very exciting, but it’s a necessary part of dressing well. It is all very well poring over the latest statement prints, obsessing over the construction of a suit or reading up on the history of a brand to ensure you’re getting the best-quality Oxfords – but we must not forget about the simpler things in our wardrobes, such as T-shirts, button-up shirts or socks. And that is what today’s Editor’s Picks concerns. No fireworks here. But, if you get the basics right, everything else will follow and you must not run before you can walk, after all. To prevent us from overwhelming you with tired clichés, we will end on a clearer note: here are some fine wardrobe basics, new on site today, which can form the foundations of a strong spring wardrobe. Scroll and shop while stocks last (and then focus on the more interesting things in life).

The shirt
We made sure to labour the point that this was not the most exciting selection of product. And there is nothing groundbreaking about a plain denim shirt. But, if you look closely, Cav Empt has done its best to make its version of the classic a little more interesting. Firstly, the construction. This Japanese-made shirt is shorter on the arms, with a looser fit – meaning you could easily pass it off as a lightweight jacket, too. What’s more, it has been embroidered with the Cav Empt moniker meaning people will know you’ve put a bit of thought into the brands you invest in. We would advise pairing this with some slim-fit chinos (which are a little more adventurous and striking than jeans).

The t-shirt
This T-shirt from Parisian workwear brand Officine Generale is rendered in a comfortable linen and jersey blend making it a foolproof go-to when the mercury starts to rise. When it does get chilly, though, throw on an overshirt in a neutral colour – this one from The Lost Explorer is a solid choice because its sandy shade will go with almost everything, and its cotton-ripstop material is sustainable, durable and organic. What else could you wish for?

The socks
These days, you can probably tell more about a man from his sneakers than you can from his shoes, but you can tell even more about him by which side he takes in the debate between wearing socks and eschewing them entirely. To prevent your sneakers – such as this fine pair from Raf Simons that also landed on site today – acquiring the odour of your feet this summer, it’s a good idea to invest in some no-show socks, such as these ones from Pantherella. Their subtly colourful design means they’ll look good when the shoes are off, too.
