THE JOURNAL

Mr Josh Caffé must be wondering why we asked him to prepare our annual alternative Christmas playlist. “I’m not the most festive person,” says the east London-based DJ and musician, who brought his vintage-heavy personal style to MR PORTER’s How I Wear It series earlier this year. “I find the idea of Christmas music quite irritating.”
Festive tunes might not be his forte, then. But there are few people better qualified when it comes to another vital element of the holiday season: bringing the party. As a resident DJ at London superclub Fabric and a regular behind the decks at cult queer nightlife hub Dalston Superstore, he’s spent years keeping the city’s club scene moving with his signature blend of deep house and techno.
It’s a more reflective, mellow and down-tempo Caffé who greets us in this playlist, the Holiday Wind Down, which you can listen to now on Spotify. “I guess you could say this playlist is therapy from all the Christmas mania,” he says. “Songs that don't include a red-nosed reindeer, kissing under the mistletoe and sitting on an old man’s knee.”
An alternative Christmas playlist with heavy emphasis on the word “alternative”, then, MR PORTER’s Holiday Wind Down is a long way from the world of acoustic, indie-fied Mr Bing Crosby covers. Let’s put it this way: you certainly won’t be hearing any of its tracks blaring out at your local coffee shop. If you’re more about parties than prezzies at Christmas, this one’s got your name all over it.
Mr Josh Caffé’s top three tracks
01. “Buy More” by Ms Chris Korda
“Chris Korda is a legend. This song’s lyrics sum up Christmas.”
02. “Halfcrazy” by Ojerime
“Slow, trippy R&B with hypnotic vocals. The title of the song is generally how I feel on Boxing Day.”
03. “Ai Shi Temasu (Japanese Love)” by No Smoke
“A great track you’ll have on repeat.”
