THE JOURNAL

We travel more than ever, but despite advances in technology that means we can now fit a camera, torch, wallet, phone and entire computer system into a single handheld device, all of us still have to transport our stuff around in something. A bag is a symbol of a man who has somewhere to go; a sense of purpose if you will. Whether that’s to the gym, the pub or to another country is his business, but a good bag is paramount if the man in question is to look put-together.
For that, it’s wise to look to a brand with real expertise. Eastpak has been making reliable bags to take you from A to B since the company was founded in 1952. Back then, it was more focused on making tough gear for the US Army than it was about furnishing you with something to take you through Heathrow Terminal 5 and back again, but its commitment to making sturdy bags has endured.
Durability, of course, is the brand’s bread and butter. Eastpak’s bags might not be built for war anymore, but they are certainly robust enough for the daily grind and beyond. Its latest collection, though, takes things a step further. CNNCT is a unique satellite collection from the bag brand that combines a slick, urban look with an offering of backpacks and suitcases that are as robust and practical as they are affordable.
Some of the features of the styles below are the kind of thing that you didn’t know you needed until they’re there. From detachable laundry bags and indestructible materials to padded edges and huge compartments, these are the bags designed to take you where you need to go.
Tecum

Of all the bags you’ll find us carrying to work at MR PORTER HQ, it’s likely that most of them will be backpacks. It’s a no-brainer: they are practical, can hold a lot of stuff and, nowadays, they’re fresher than ever. Of course, not all backpacks are made equal, but with the new Tecum style, it seems Eastpak really did think of everything. It has padded tablet sleeves and a laptop compartment lined with fleece to keep your devices in good nick, and has also packed in a bottle holder, internal organiser and fully padded handles, straps and a back panel to make sure it’s comfortable to carry. Plus, its ultra-sleek design means it will look sharp with most whatever you decide to wear with it.
Trans4 Connect

Want to pack light but prefer something that gives your appurtenances a little more breathing space (and looks sharper) than a standard holdall? Eastpak proffers the Trans4Connect. The best points about this one all lie in the details: the handles on the side and top are padded to make lugging it onto a conveyor belt or overheard compartment that little easier. Also note the capacious double deck compartment – of which both sides zip up to store and separate your luggage conveniently – there are also clip buckled compression straps to secure everything neatly in its place. Oh, and it’s 10 percent nylon, so while it looks sharp, it’s also incredibly hardwearing, not to mention the telescopic handle and four wheels, which turn 360 degrees to make carrying it through an airport or train station effortless. Quite possibly the sleekest thing to carry through customs.
Tranverz

Calling the Eastpak Tranverz a suitcase almost feels reductive; it’s more like a spaceship. The Tranverz comes in three different sizes, and is a triumph of wheeled luggage that boasts a long list of extras. Garment straps! Accessory pouches! A detachable laundry bag! If suitcase-chucking airport attendants make you anxious, the Tranverz also has hardy corners crafted out of Hypalon, a synthetic rubber material noted for its resistance to chemicals and temperature extremes. There are also padded front, top and side handles to keep it comfortable, and to make packing simpler than ever, it also boasts compression straps and a foldable base. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, it’s also engineered with an impossibly smooth wheeling system to make your travels as easy and breezy as possible.
