Looking for the footwear of the season and looks to wear with them? Fill your boots.

It’s that wonderful time of year again. No, not Christmas. It’s barely November. There’ll be plenty of time to invest in a novelty sweater once December rolls around, we promise. For now, our topic is the arrival of cold, wet weather and, with it, boots. The recent cold snap has reminded us that a sturdy pair of lace-ups are in order, and, sagely, our fashion editors have earmarked boots as one of the top trends for the season to come (on a related note, you can read the whole list of them here). Considering a good portion of the globe has barely recovered from a scorching-hot summer, though, it wouldn’t surprise us if you need to be coaxed out of your slip-ons. For anyone having trouble making the transition, here’s how to wear them on the weekend, to work and in the great outdoors.

Winter boots, like their seasonal sidekicks, shearling jackets and tactile sweaters, are a reassuring presence in your wardrobe. Work boots – that is, boots you wear to the office as opposed to anything with reinforced toes – are a slightly different breed. For reasons that hardly require further explanation, they’re smarter. But they also have to be equally as sturdy as the pairs you stomp about in at the weekend. BBC statistics reveal the average British commute clocks in at a staggering 54 minutes and, if your job is in the City, that adds up to an awful lot of pavement pounding. Grenson’s Leander cap-toes are Goodyear-welted and set on the brand’s signature stout soles, so you’ll get plenty of mileage out of them. Wear with your sharpest suit and throw this Prince of Wales-checked Kingsman coat over the top.

If function holds more sway over you than form, you’re in luck: the powers that be have decided hiking boots are the shoe of the season. Both of the previous entries on this list are suitable for trekking around the city, sure, but for anything more hardcore (ie, actual treks), you’ll probably want to seek out a specialist, such as Italian performance brand ROA.
