Who Were The Best-Dressed Men Of April 2023?

Words by The MR PORTER Team

24 April 2023

“Good artists copy and great artists steal,” Mr Pablo Picasso once said. “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery,” wrote Mr Oscar Wilde. Would either hold up in today’s court of intellectual property law? It’s unlikely. But in the realm of styling, at least, the lines are a little more fuzzy. That’s great news for all those racking their brains over what to wear as we enter the new season: why expend any energy curating your own spring wardrobe when you can just poach someone else’s? To aid and abet in that effort, we’ve rounded up seven impeccably dressed guys whose April outfits we’ll be replicating without shame.

01.

Mr Jacob Elordi

To be honest, we weren’t expecting Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo satchel – by all accounts, “a ladies’ bag” – to be the menswear accessory of 2023. But when you think about it, it’s a perfectly sized ideal companion for daily outings. A roomy upgrade from overstuffing your pockets or that complimentary canvas tote, but not quite ludicrously capacious. Mr Jacob Elordi, who’s been papped with the the Andiamo on a few occasions, demonstrates here how the intricate intrecciato weave instantly elevates a laid-back fit, pairing the it-bag with the it-sneaker, the adidas Samba, which adds a nice pop of colour to his otherwise neutral palette. We’re also delighted to see the return of the overall for this spring/summer season, and Elordi’s khaki pick is notably understated and cool.

A$AP Rocky

What’s that? A$AP Rocky is one of MR PORTER’s best-dressed men of the month? Yes, the American rapper seems to have secured a permanent spot on our best-dressed podium, but that’s only because he continues to twist our arm with his sartorial choices. Even a leisurely stroll through Beverly Hills is enough of an occasion for him to step out in a pristine white button-up shirt and smart tie combo, paired with classic light wash denim and Gucci loafers, although it was the slouchy navy trench coat that really caught our eye. Will he make the cut – yet again – in next month’s line-up? We certainly wouldn’t bet against it.

03.

Mr Patrick Schwarzenegger

The cones, the chain-link fence, the hi-vis vests: this can only be a “backstage at Coachella” shot. One of countless celebrities who made the annual pilgrimage to the Colorado Desert this April, Mr Patrick Schwarzenegger stuck to the style brief in a low-key combo of belted denim, white T-shirt and Dodgers baseball cap. However, it’s the actor’s choice of knitwear that elevated this outfit from general-entry festivalgoer to VIP-paddock status (and more importantly, a spot on our esteemed list). Alanui’s fringed Icon cardigan is a firm favourite here at MR PORTER and it’s always a pleasure to see it out in the wild (if you can describe the Coachella backstage area as wild).

04.

Mr Leonard Scheicher

German actor Mr Leonard Scheicher’s black suit and skinny tie may look very similar to the uniform of the colourfully named characters in Mr Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 debut Reservoir Dogs, but a black-and-white combo is a classic for a reason. Once described as a modern male answer to the Little Black Dress, it’s a versatile look that can be dressed up or down and has continued the test of time. That said, anything too classic can easily become deathly dull, so we’re always fans of subtle tweaks to the blueprint. Follow the lead of Scheicher here, who has swapped in a leather jacket to match his beaten-up black boots.

Mr Donald Glover

Did you apply? This month, emerging from a tangelo orchard, cultural polymath Mr Donald Glover announced that his new creative studio, Gilga, was hiring. Notably absent from the nine one-sentence job specs was the role of stylist, because Glover already has that covered. Of course, it helps when you have prior access to VALENTINO’s AW23 collection. But, also, this is not a man easily constrained by rules. So, while he didn’t technically break the black-tie dress code at GQ’s Global Creativity Awards, his quarter-zip the colour and size of the Hulk certainly bent it to his whim as he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Apple CEO Mr Tim Cook. Elsewhere, Glover’s mentorship of Ms Malia Obama suggests that his approach to employment law is, thankfully, less sassy.

Channel Tres

We’re not sure what’s worth familiarising yourself with first: Channel Tres’ musical back catalogue, or his equally underrated sartorial one. Since we’re a menswear outlet, let’s say the latter, with this top-notch outfit high on the list of looks to study-slash-steal. Here, the rapper offers a lesson in how to do pumped-up proportions in a way that feels fresh but not wacky – the sunglasses make a statement but aren’t too buggish; the blazer is boxy, but doesn’t swallow him up. The jeans also build on the subtly oversized theme in a rich shade of indigo that breaks up all the white up top. And just when we thought we we’d had hit peak puddle boot (blame those gargantuan red monsters), Channel Tres’ left-of-field footwear swiftly made us reconsider.

Mr Lou Adler

Our sincere apologies to Mr Lou Adler. Despite being a first-timer on our list, the legendary music producer has actually been proving his chops as one of Hollywood’s most under-the-radar dressers for longer than we’ve been around. But no better time than the present to correct our oversight and pay homage – specifically to his ability to look effortlessly put-together and his impeccable colour-coordinating efforts. The outfit he wore courtside at the Lakers game earlier this month – hype-worthy Nike Vomero 5 kicks with a low-key stealth-wealth cardigan and tonal suit trousers – has got to be a standout example of such styling prowess. We challenge you to find someone else who wears 89 (yes, really) so well.
