Celebrities such as A$AP Rocky, Mr Harry Styles and Machine Gun Kelly, who have been wearing lashings of freshwater pearls over the past few seasons, coupled with the dissolution of traditionally masculine dress codes, have led to a sea change in men’s jewellery. The days when a style-conscious man could wear a watch and some cufflinks and consider himself suitably decked out are long gone. An era of more flippant, unisex finery has taken its place. As dangly earrings, statement rings and attention-grabbing chains have edged closer to the norm (you can blame Normal People’s Mr Paul Mescal for the latter), the more fearless among us will see an opportunity to have a little more fun.
If you’re in the market for something quirky, look to FRIENDS WITH ANIMALS, a Los Angeles-based brand that incorporates gold and silver into charm necklaces festooned with colourful beads in the shape of crocodiles, ladybirds and mushrooms (as seen on Saturday Night Live comedian Mr Pete Davidson above). Another couple of stellar recommendations to jot down: POLITE WORLDWIDE®, whose bright gem-threaded bracelets and necklaces are popular with singer Mr Justin Bieber, and Hatton Labs, which makes eye-catching pearl and crystal tennis bracelets that will add some personality to a look.
Similar, in a way, to a tattoo (but one you can take off at the end of the day), a contemporary piece of jewellery adds individual spirit to an outfit. It is a signifier of confidence that feels good to show off. Ms Coco Chanel might once have advised removing one thing before leaving the house, but she isn’t around to see how well actor Mr Jaden Smith can style a beaded necklace. In 2021, more is more.
