THE JOURNAL

From Messrs Joaquin Phoenix to Jack O’Connell, our global round-up of who wore it well last month.
We know it’s January. But remember December? Things seemed so much more pleasant then, rose-tinted as they were with a haze of mulled wine, jingling bells and jolly sing-alongs. So let’s be kind to ourselves. Let’s take a mental trip back 30 days. These are the outfits that caught MR PORTER’s eye in-between swigs of eggnog, frantic present wrapping and other unrestrained paroxysms of festive feeling. Even during our detox-induced crankiness, they still look good. Which is really saying something.
Tinie Tempah

Tinie Tempah’s last album, Demonstration, was released more than a year ago. Evidently, this has given him ample time to work out how to wear one of fall/ winter 2014’s more difficult propositions, the carpet coat, which he pulls off here with an effortless attitude. Working with, rather than against, the busy pattern, he’s paired the coat with a simple black sweatshirt and jeans, harmonising the outfit by picking out a complementary shade of brown in his shoes. The relaxed-fit jeans also nod to one of spring’s key style ideas, the wide-leg trouser.

Mr Aaron Young

For Afterburner, a site-specific installation for Kukje Gallery during Art/ Basel Miami Beach 2014, artist Mr Aaron Young took a blowtorch to the walls of the show space. It appears he also took himself shopping along South Beach, given the bright white of his trousers (which have obviously never been on public transport) and the “just in” styling of his contrasting plaid shirt and striped tee. As well as being a fresh, breezy summer look that effortlessly combines three bold colours, it also happens to pick him out very prominently in front of the series of hand-burned canvases he also showed at the exhibition. But we’re sure he didn’t plan it that way. Well, sure-ish.

Mr Jack O’Connell

Mr O’Connell at HuffPost Live, New York, 5 December Rex Features
“Jack O’Connell”. “Jack O’Connell”. It feels as if everybody is talking about this Jack O’Connell. There’s Sir Michael Caine, who’s called him the “star of the future”. There’s Ms Angelina Jolie, who, after directing him in December’s Unbroken, says he’s a “gift”. The New York Times’ T Magazine affirms he’s an “approachable James Dean”. The Guardian has dubbed him “the toast of Hollywood”. A craze is setting in. Soon, no doubt it will be the announcer on the subway: “This train terminates at… Jack O’Connell.” Or the blackboard at the sandwich bar: “Today’s special is… Jack O’Connell!” In preparation for 2015, which, inevitably, is looking to be very Jack O’Connell-shaped, let us consider the understated outfit he wore to his HuffPost Live recording this December. It’s classically polite and British, with its brown brogues, checked scarf and impeccably tapered trousers. But it’s also a little rebellious thanks to the sleek leather jacket. The resulting hardnut-done-good attitude is very much in line with one of the season’s key trends: Jack O’Connell.

Mr Joaquin Phoenix

Jacket plus jeans is an unstable style equation. Sometimes the result is cool and casual, sometimes it’s a little bit man-child or off-duty estate agent. Mr Joaquin Phoenix has managed to avoid all the pitfalls and pull off the look particularly well here by keeping his overall colour scheme dark, investing in brand-new Converse sneakers and paying special attention to his accessories – especially the sharp white sliver of his pocket square.

Mr Robbie Rogers

Mr Rogers at the GQ Men Of The Year awards, LA, 4 December Rex Features
Not only does footballer Mr Robbie Rogers have a brand-new autobiography out, which he’s been touring around the US this autumn, it looks as if he has a brand-new suit and shoes to boot. Or perhaps he just knows how to properly care for said items, which he wore to GQ’s annual Men Of The Year party. In any case, there’s a sense of polish to this outfit that begins with the spot-on fit of the windowpane-check double-breasted jacket and ends with the way the wine-coloured tie and shiny brown boots add warmth to the neutral greys. Score.

Mr Lincoln Pilcher

Ms Murphy and Mr Pilcher out and about in New York, 13 December Splash News/ Corbis
Da-ba-dee, da-ba-dah: New York restaurateur Mr Lincoln Pilcher is blue, and the world is his witness (as well as his long-time girlfriend, Ms Carolyn Murphy, also pictured here). This outfit is a masterclass in what your personal stylist would call “tonal layering”; that is, mixing the same central colour in several different shades and intensities to create a sense of depth to your coordinating items. There is a danger here of full-on Smurfdom, but Mr Pilcher keeps it from spiralling out of control by adding a contrasting shade of brown in his footwear.

Mr Matthew Beard

Part of a burgeoning brat pack of young English actors, Mr Matthew Beard also made a good case for his membership in the style elite this December by turning up to the Dubai International Film Festival in this eye-catching velvet tuxedo. When you’re shimmering all over, little extra is needed, which is why his choice of plain black dress shoes and a neat, matching bow tie is to be applauded. In addition, the slim, contemporary cut of the suit wards off any Oscar Wilde/ opium den associations.

Mr Allessandro Nivola

Movember is still just a few weeks gone, and we’re still a little traumatised by some of our friends’ and colleagues’ efforts. Hats off, then, to actor Mr Allessandro Nivola, who reminded us at the premiere of upcoming film Selma that lip bristles can be worn with conviction and aplomb way into December. (Moustaches are like puppies in that they should be for life. Or at least longer than a month.) His square-shouldered three-button suit has a sleek, tuxedo-like feel but the blue shirt and striped tie add a youthful, preppy touch that’s as pleasing as it is unexpected.
