Father’s Day Gift Guide: Our Picks For Every Kind Of Dad

Adult children, take note. Father’s Day lands on Sunday 21 June – and this year it may not be enough (or even possible, given current circumstances) to simply bless him with your presence. So, how do you go about showing your old man some love?

A gift is a good place to start, but choosing the right one is easier said than done. The market for Father’s Day gifts is awash with beer tasting sets, tacky sports merch, “#1 Dad” mugs and more, all of which, apart from being generally undesirable, betray a serious lack of effort on your part.

Such a gift might rightly cause offence, because it doesn’t take much effort to get it right. All you really need to do is ask yourself what kind of dad, and man, he is.

Is he an old soul or is he young at heart? Is he houseproud? Tech-obsessed? Does he have a thing for vintage sneakers? If you can answer these questions, you’ll be a lot closer to tracking down that perfect gift. And to assist you in this game of mental Guess Who, we’ve selected a few of our favourite gifts, categorised into three distinct personas. We hope that among them there will be something to delight every dad. There’s plenty more in MR PORTER’s Gifts section, too.

01. Classic Dad

Do his tastes tend towards the traditional? A pair of cufflinks or a wallet might sound like run-of-the-mill Father’s Day gifts, but chosen properly they can be truly special. Take these gold-tone cufflinks, for instance, which are from the seventh-generation family jewellers Deakin & Francis, or the smart leather cardholder on the upper right of this picture, which comes courtesy of Dries Van Noten. These are simple things made exceptionally well, which can be said of much else seen here. Caran d’Ache’s bright orange pen makes a great gift for any dad who still enjoys the act of putting ink to paper, while we’d never hesitate to recommend Nike’s Tailwind, a retro revival from 1979.

02. Hype Dad

When we think of Father’s Day gifts, our minds don’t immediately travel to hype sneakers from Off-White, limited-edition skateboard decks from The Skateroom, collectible pieces of contemporary art from BE@RBRICK or any of the other items seen in this picture. But why not? Becoming a father doesn’t mean that your tastes have to change, and there are plenty of dads out there with modern tastes who are likely to appreciate these gifts far more than they would a traditional shaving set, a pair of slippers or a bottle of scotch. (Not that there’s anything wrong with a bottle of scotch, mind.)

03. Houseproud Dad

Buying gifts for the home can be a risky business. A man’s home is his castle, after all, a place over which he can assert some sense of control. If you’re not careful when choosing a gift, you run the risk of introducing something into his life that he’s going to resent having around. Having said that, of all the men you could buy a gift for, your dad is a fairly safe bet. You most likely spent years living with him, for starters, so you know his tastes in interiors; in addition to that, any gift from his beloved child is sure to be given pride of place. MR PORTER’s line-up of candles, hand-cut crystal decanters, games and coffee-table books – a selection of which are seen here – is a great place to get started.
