THE JOURNAL

The hat, bag and wallet you need this season.
Summer is almost upon us, but as the mercury creeps up, so too does the pressure to change up your wardrobe and don something more season-appropriate. And with potential sartorial pitfalls at every turn (can you pull off short shorts? And more importantly, should you even try?), dressing well for summer can be a minefield that starts with a T-shirt from last year that no longer fits, and ends with you getting funny looks on the Tube because everyone can see your nipples through that linen shirt that looked fine when you left the house. So, rather than get too involved with any tedious rules about what you should and shouldn’t be wearing this summer, we advise starting with your accessories. A fresh wallet here, a new bag there – once you’ve got those down and feel a little more updated, the rest will likely follow. Below you’ll find a selection of accessories that have landed on site today, plus some summery pieces you can pair them with.
THE HAT
We know what you're thinking: that hat looks something straight from the stylist’s wardrobe of Kevin & Perry Go Large. But, whether you like it or not, the 1990s are very much back, and along with grungy oversized shirts and wide-legged trousers are bucket hats, and this white one from contemporary Swedish brand Acne Studios has us wanting to get tickets to a Madchester rave. Still, if you lean towards the urbane over the urban, you can wear it with this linen jacket from Oliver Spencer, which is potentially the most summer-perfect jacket on the market.
THE BAG
This backpack from Burberry comes in the brand’s classic camel check pattern, and is roomy enough to house clothes, a wash bag, or a laptop. Crafted from a robust canvas with a leather trim, we think it’s a keeper. We also predict that it won’t be around for very long, so we recommend nabbing it while you still can. Let the checked pattern stand out by keeping the rest of your outfit understated – this short-sleeved white shirt from Danish brand NN07 will do nicely.
THE WALLET
If you were looking for a wallet upgrade and want something sophisticated, you could do worse than this black saffiano leather one from Mark Cross. Crafted for longevity, it’s a clean investment piece that is free of all external finery – no ostentatious logos or pesky metal lettering here, so it will slide into your pocket with ease. Complement it with some black leather sneakers from Common Projects – they’re smart enough to go with a suit, and strike the perfect balance between smart and contemporary.
